I can't figure it. It still seems to work fine for me on both Safari and Firefox. There is an alternative source at MegaUpload. Try that one.

Are you using Safari to download? Try it using Firefox

The guide at the top of this thread has now been updated for the new firmware 2.0.1 and the new Pwnage tool which now includes a beta version of the new Installer.app

Hmm, weird stuff here... the process went swimmingly, everything seems to have worked.... iTunes restores my stuff as per the usual, but now it still wants to either restore or set the phone up as a new fone... I cannot access any otehr syncing stuff... the phone itself appears just fine.

I am trying another restore, but I guess I will have to set up as new if it doesnt "take" this time. Its such a pain because in the v2 firmware it is so SLOOOOWWWWW

I have the same situation and ended up doing a start from the beginning restore - not from back up.

Once you have built the custom FW file, can you use it on more than one iPhone?

For example. My phone has finished all good. Can I now send the custom.ipsw file to my partners computer and she can just restore her phone with it?

I had the same problem on the two phone's I've done. It is easy to get around though, because it does actually do the restore fine, it just doesn't recognise that it's done it. So, after doing the restore once, go into iTunes prefs and, under the Syncing tab, delete the back-up of the phone. Then connect the phone again and this time choose "set up as a new phone". The it will back itself up, and after that it recognises it fine, and all is well.

I think I am going to have to start over again tonight. Mail is crashing now, too, and Mail on the phone cancels sync from iTunes... so I think the new phone thing is where I will go with it, later, without even attempting to use a backup.

Thanks for the advice, LB

Is point 8.3 mentioned because data ends up being enabled and this can be very costly?

Once I am about to edit the info do I just remove it?

Yes. The carrier lists for Optus and Vodafone (but not Telstra) turn off the menu item that allows you to edit your APN which is the address that allows your phone to access data via GPRS. If you want to disable the GPRS data access, for expense or any other reason, you need to do it by putting a nonsense APN in. If you just leave it blank, it may fill it in again by itself.

Once activated, you will find the menu item in Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network.
