When you have a jailbroken iPhone 3G and Apple release a firmware update (eg. 2.0.1), are you still able to install this via iTunes or do you have to wait for the Pwnage Tool to release a v 2.0.1?
Can anyone answer this question .. i also wanna know ... thanx !

Everytime Apple release a new firmware version, you will have to wait for the Pwnage/Quickpwn tool to be updated to support that firmware version also.
If you have a jailbroken iPhone, and you just update/restore via iTunes, your phone will no longer be jailbroken.

The current version firmware is 2.0.2, and is able to be jailbroken by Pwnage 2.0.3.1 or Quickpwn 2.5 beta.

Guys

I am so sorry for doing this - but a question.

I have my iphone on 2.1 and want to jailbreak - all the guides have ipsw files for 2.0.1

I assume the guide process is the same - but what version of Pawnage do I need and the Ipsw for 2.1 and bootloaders etc. etc.. (if needed)

Can someone help please.

thanks

tony, just use quickpwn. Go to blog.iphone-dev.org to download it. Do this:

a) update to the standard firmware using itunes 8.
b) run quickpwn
c) follow nose through process. Only thing you really need to worry about is if you want the custom boot logos etc (I said no).

Much easier than pwnage and also quicker.

Are there any differences in this tutorial with iTunes 8 and PwnageTool 2.1? I tried to install it on my iPhone 3G but it came up with an error in itunes. Am I supposed to do something different since it's iTunes 8?

UPDATE: I have successfully jailbroken my iPhone now!

Anyone considering this should perform a sync with iTunes BEFORE they utilise the pwn program - that way if you need to do an original restore, you won't lose all the data like SMS, Recents etc... I got the 1600 error (16gb black on 2.2 software) and lost a few days because I didn't sync first
