OH well after 5 hours of reading howto's and blogs all I've managed to do is turn my 3G iPhone into a iPod touch
I can install the pwned firmware no problems ( done it three times now) but I get no signal from telstra. I've tried 4 times to restore back to the factory firmware ( iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) but it errors right at the end with an error (6)
Tried different USB port and rebooting
Seems strange that iTunes will install the pwned firmware but not the Apple original.
Not sure what to do now. Any suggestions

Have you tried restoring to the apple stock firmware with the phone in DFU mode?

Did you try Basic or Advanced?
Open Finder
then go to your home folder > Library > iTunes > iPhone Software Update
Remove everything in there
Restart iTunes and restore the phone in DFU mode.

Mine worked fine, ported the contacts and SMS's across fine.
My 1.1.4 was patched using the WhirlPool AU number formatting patches.
