How To - Push your Google Calendar & Contacts to your iPhone/iPod for free.

For those who don't want to shell out the $99 for a MobileMe subscription, here’s a free alternative with support for push Contacts & Calendar on your iPod touch or iPhone, powered by NuevaSync and Google.

NuevaSync is a new website setup which links Google Calendar and Contacts with their Exchange server, letting you sync your Google items with devices that support Microsoft Exchange.

First up, you’re going to need a Google Account (you’ll need a Gmail account if you wish to sync your contacts too.) if you dont already have one (Google Apps accounts work fine). You can sign up for a Google account here.

Once that is done, NuevaSync reccommends you verify your account, by filling out a simple CAPTCHA.
For regular Gmail and Calendar accounts go to:
https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha
For Google Apps accounts go to:
https://www.google.com/a/YOURDOMAIN.com/UnlockCaptcha (substitute ‘YOURDOMAIN’ with well, your domain!)

So, you’ve got your Gmail account set up, and you’ve verified your account. Now, here’s the fun stuff.
Surf on over to NuevaSync, and create a new account. It only takes a second.

When you’ve verified your account, login to set your settings. We’ll start with Calendar. Click ‘Change’ next to the Calendar option, and choose ‘Google’ (or disabled if you dont want to sync your calendar). Click Change to confirm. On the next page, click the link to configure your account.

On this page, enter in your Google Account details (full email address, eg test@gmail.com) of the account you wish to sync with. All of your calendars will be synced to your device.
Click Save.
Alright, that’s the Calendar all sorted. Now, on to your contacts!

Head back to the status page on NuevaSync, where you’ll hit ‘change’ next to Contacts. Here, you can choose from your Google or your Plaxo contacts. I’m selecting Google for this guide. Again, you’ll need to fill out your Google Account info of the account you wish to use.
Save, and back to the status page; it should look something like this:

Click the image to open in full size.

So, we’ve got the online part all worked out. Let’s move on to setting up your iPod/iPhone.
Tap ‘Settings’ from your home screen, followed by ‘Mail, Contacts, Calendars’, then ‘Add Account’.

Click the image to open in full size.

Choose ‘Microsoft Exchange’ from the list of services (it’s the top one).

Under Email, put in the one you used for NuevaSync registration.
Your Username is the one you chose when you registered for NuevaSync, and same for the password.
For description, you can put anything (I decided on ‘NuevaSync’).
Tap ‘Next’.
Your device will now verify your account, and may take a couple of minutes.
After it has been verified, you’ll see a new field, “Server”. Enter “www.nuevasync.com” in here. (without the quotes)
When the next page comes up, make sure you turn off ‘Mail’. You can also toggle Contacts or Calendar if you just want to sync one of them.
Tap ‘Save’.

That’s it, it’s done! You can play around with your push/fetch settings in the Settings.app on your device as well.
Click the image to open in full size.

I was trying out your part two but my 10.5.4 with MobileMe update does not have sync with google option! O_O

My Address Book is v. 4.1.1

Nevermind, found out why. Lifehacker link

You need to have had and iPod touch or iPhone connected at least once for this option to appear. Or use the hack from Lifehacker above

Hmm, strange :S
Here's an alternative solution;

(This wont work if you've already set up push on your iPhone/iPod using NuevaSync or similar - you can turn it off by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Under Accounts, tap which account currently has contacts sync > and toggle Contacts to 'off'. Now you can continue on with the rest)

Plug in your iPhone, and open up iTunes
Choose your iPhone from the sidebar, and pick the 'info' tab (or the equivalent for iPhones - only got an iPod to try this with).
Under Contacts, tick Sync Address Book contacts.
Also, tick Sync Google Contacts, then put in your google account.
Click apply, and then sync your iPhone.
Disconnect from your computer, and then you can turn push contacts back on (the opposite of what's up top).
*Hopefully* this setting will stick and you'll have Google synching goodness.

Great post.

I'm currently syncing my phone with outlook at work, but I figure it makes sense to move my contacts to Google, as I don't have access to my work contacts at home. If I sync my home itunes to google contacts, will it upload my contacts from the phone to google? (this would be before setting up this push solution).

Thanks for this post. I've got some of my multiple Google calendars coming through nicely now. I've got one of them now coming through at all though. Not sure what the problem is, I'll have to check their discussion forums I think.

Edit: to update everyone.. it's all working now. I just did a "resync" and it's fixed it all. Push works fantastically

question, before doing this, when syncing the contacts are the pictures you've associated with the contacts transferred across as well?

Apple - Server - Mac OS X Leopard - Snow Leopard

Looks like snow leopard server for home might be a good investment. Or hook up with a few mates and get it hosted....

I've got this all set up for calendars now. It doesn't seem to pick up all my events though... Some came through fine and some just don't show up at all. If I update an event in Google Calendar it shows up but I don't really want to go through and make a change to every single event.

Does anyone know a way to force it to sync again?

I tried this - the over-the-air calendar syncing works (I sync office Windows Outlook to Google Calendar) but there is one major bug - events that cross over the time of another event do not seem to be synced from Google Calendar to the iPhone calendar, which is a huge problem, so I've stopped using this after trying it out.
