but surely "some areas" can't cover ALL of Australia. that's false advertising, no? "some areas" suggests (to me anyway) that its a 3G thing... why else would it even be mentioned on the Australian Apple site?
on looking at this again, it doesn't even say that this line "Some features and services are not available in all areas. See your carrier for more details" is related to th VV... it could be related to GPS? just a thought.

I don't mean to be impatient or rude (I very much appreciate the conglomeration of iGos and don't mind reading through the forums)...I Just think it funny that the constantly updated faq was last changed..15 days ago(at least according to the Last time edited thing in the post)...thats all.

It didn't change for 15 days because nothing happened in those 15 days until yesterday. FAQ will be updated shortly with the new info on Telstra's plans however.

Obviously (to update this thread) the phone CAN be unlocked. You can buy the phone outright on Optus pre-paid, and unlock it for $80.

Best Carrier for International Roaming on iPhone 3G
OK, so I'm desperate for the 3G iPhone, who isn't. But I am also heading off on a round the world holiday soon. GPS mapping would be a great bonus for walking around unfamiliar cities.
So my question is in two parts:
1) Which carrier Telstra/Optus/Vodafone will sting me least on data for international roaming
and
2) How much data will I use to cache local google maps
At this point I am (I can't believe I'm saying this) leaning towards Telstra because of the ongoing utility of free WiFi hotspots.
Any advice?

If you want to use the gps over seas, you need to find out if the data will be used at a high rate as you are over seas. I would like to think it not but it be best to ask.

Hmmm, let me re-read my question.... Isn't that what I just asked?
