Nope, no warranty if the product wasn't released in the country. Simple answer "Ship it back to where you got it". If it was obviously hacked they could be required to return it to Apple as you're clearly in breach of your user agreement.
That said I know of many times where Apple Auz and NZ have serviced warranty jobs, where they could have referred them back to the country of origin. The AppleCare program is second to none, I highly recommend purchasing extended AppleCare, if you own less than 10 items.

If there's no Bluetooth...does that mean it will sync calendars/contacts wirelessly or would it still have to be plugged in with the iPod cord to do that plus the iTunes stuff?

It has got Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (enhanced data rate). Though at this time it's not clear if you will be able to do anything with it beyond using a bluetooth headset. Apple locked it down to only headsets in version 1.
I can't remember if version 1 of the iPhone had 2.0 + EDR. It seems to be a waste if it did... and if it didn't then why have they increased it on this one?
At the moment the suggestion from Apple is that you would sync via MobileMe wirelessly. If you can do that without MobileMe then it would probably use WiFi as it's much faster.
**edit** I've just double checked and according to this, version 1 iPhone does have Bluetooth 2.0

is it possible for 3rd party programs to use the bluetooth capabilities of the 3G iphone and therefore open up the use of the bluetooth for file transfer etc or is this an Apple only area?

I've not heard anything at all. None of the stuff that has been gleamed from the SDK has mentioned Bluetooth as far as I can recall. That might be a good thing, but of course it might also be a bad one.

Oh, I do hope visual voicemail is supported.
I recall reading somewhere that software can do this and it doesn't necessarily need to be done on the telco's side.. anyone heard this before?
Great work again Decryption!

Is it true that the iPhone 3G doesn't have MMS or video calling?
This is correct as they are dumb features Apple did us the saving grace of removing. Thank you Apple.

Well they have already made 3rd party apps allowing MMS and video calling, so I guess it is possible. I think we discussed it a while back and the general consensus was that you would nly be able to send and receive when you were running a specific app for the purpose, which would be a big battery drainer.

Reminds me of 'thank you dear leader, you know what is best for us'. Seriously though, video calling is an overrated gimmick that just chews your data and MMS is stupid when compared to the power of email on the iPhone.

Although i was watching Babel the other day and i have to say i realised what a great application video chat is for hearing impaired people, and then it got me thinking, if you cannot see for example at night or you are riding your bike for example, and want to skip a track, the iphone is pretty much useless unless you stop and look at it. On the ipods the click wheel solved this problem. I believe i was reading a post on a forum where someone was criticising the lack of voice control on the iphone. I wonder if they will consider this later on. On conventional phones you have buttons and you know without even looking what you are pressing. This isn't possible on the iphone.

I didn't say I disagree (especially on the video calling), just that this was extremely unprofessionally written.

Define professional. I'd say a professional is someone who generally doesn't use gimmicks like MMS and video calling.

To skip a track on the iPhone just double click the part of the headphones where the mic is, that will skip the track. You can pause the track by clicking once. There's volume buttons on the side for that. Can't image what else you'd need to do without looking at it.
Downside to this is you need the original iPhone headphones or headphones made for the iPhone. Lucky for me I'm perfectly fine with the original iPod/iPhone headphones.
You're completely right on the hearing impaired thing though. As for voice control, I find that more annoying than looking at the screen.
