Making your iphone louder

I don't have an iphone but it may be worth a try if you're game.

So I was feeling in a daring mood and did this tonight.....

It worked like a charm!

The iPhone is definitely noticeably louder.

Just take a pin and poke it softly in each of the little holes in the speaker (left hand side on the bottom) and for some of them (not all) you will feel it kinda break through the a thin sheet of plastic. If it doesn't go straight away don't force it.

Reading through that site I was pretty confident to try considering no one seemed to report any ill effects from it.

From what I can gather there is some kind of protection there to presumably prevent dust getting into up into it and poking the pin breaks this letting more sound out, so maybe it is a bad idea due to that but oh well - it sounds great now.

Try at your own risk of course - make sure you post results!

hmm, I just started a thread regarding the volume and how to increase it for 1.1.3, and noticed this thread.

Although I'm sure poking holes through the thin protective layer over the speaker will help it increase the volume, I don't think this is ideal as dust and little particles will find their way into your iPhone. Take a look at your dock connector, can you see a build up of dust and dirt starting to form? This is the kinda of stuff that will enter your speaker and possibly deep inside your phone if there's no thin protective layer. It'd probably take some time to cause any negative effects, but the protective layer is there for a reason.

yeah there's a mesh in there to prevent sand and dust etc getting in the speaker, when it does it rattles around and ruins the sound.

Very irritating when it happens, the mesh is there for a reason

I had a close look under a light and can see it just, the holes are barely visible and it hasn't really opened up a gaping hole which crap could get into, just broken the surface. I doubt there is very much risk of any real harm being done to the phone as a result.

Edit: Some more light on the situation;

Before freaking out it is important to remember that the mesh already has small holes in it, they are just very small and obviously restrict the sound quite a lot. Apparently this is a small fault on Apples part for using a mesh instead of something like a speaker foam which sound waves can travel through. By adding 5 or so slightly larger holes (remembering though that they are only a pin prick), the amount of sound quite noticeably increases. The mesh is still there and nothing large is going to get in there and damage it. As I said, not stressed.

Yeah I poked my Iphone a while ago with this mod. It was so worth it, I reckon it is 50% louder now. I can easily hear it ringing from the other room now.

Fair enough, but I've done it with other phones and had sand get in still.

didn't damage anything, but you can hear the sand rattling around sometimes

I have a 3G iphone with Optus on Version 2.0.2.

Is there any app that I can download to make the volume louder?

Thanks

To make your iPhone louder wouldn't it be safer to dress it up in a bright orange shirt, a big brown Fedora hat with a black sash and white bell bottom trousers with crocodile skin boots?

It really would be "loud" then.
