Carriers / plans for unlocked iPhones
Hi Guys,
For those of you lucky enough to own a completely unlocked iPhone in Australia, I am curious as to which carrier you are using (i.e. Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, etc)?
Cheers

I thought iPhone users were more or less stuck with Telstra because of EDGE or something.

This is something i've been trying to get some clarification on, do you need EDGE to surf, check emails, use google maps e.t.c. or can you use other GSM data plans.

No, you don't need Telstra (who are the only ones who offer EDGE, a faster version of GPRS.) Both Vodafone and Optus offer GPRS data, just at slightly slower speeds.
I just wish 3 Mobile was an option. They offer a 3G Data bundle which I believe is 1GB for $29. But if you roam onto GPRS/EDGE (on the Telstra network, which they share) they start charging $1.65 per MB, or something prohibitive like that.

does anyone know if a 3 SIM card will work in an iphone, in terms of calling, sms?
looking at screenshots of it, u can access APN's so u could still access 3content (lite version) with a bit of work.

optus own virgin, it shouldnt be a case of "roam" since if you are connected with virgin, you are on optus everywhere, the network dosent realy care if you are 3g or gsm.
as for edge, its a little bit faster than gprs, but not much, telstras edge will give you an average of around 65-70kbps, vs optus/vodas' gprs of around 45kbps.
all 3 offer 3.6mbps 3g, (and 7.2mbps 3g in weeks) thus, why we should all wait for iphone 2.0 (dear apple, piss this tin can air interface technology off and give consumers something useful).
as for 3, well they only offer a 3g nbetowk, so a 3 sim will roam to telstars 2g network (at the roaming charge).

3 works just fine, but no data, and all calls/sms is from Telstra (roaming).

It will roam even in the city since it wont be able to join Three's network (which is entirely 3G).

If you do this long enough Three will notice and disconnect you.

So the iPhone accepts the 3 sim? Which method are you using? Geohot or TurboSim?

Right, I must be mixing up the 3 and Virgin data plans. Apologies.
As for the many people who keep commenting on how they're going to wait for the 3G version of the iPhone, please wait quietly. None of us who have (or will soon have) iPhones give a shit.
This topic is about carriers.
