Post How to create a custom ringtone in iTunes on WIndows.

Hey guys,

I just found out a way to create a ringtone from any song in your iTunes library for your iPhone with out needing GarageBand or any software. This is very useful for PC users. I did a search of 'ringtone' and did not find this technique anywhere on MacTalk.

Ingerdients ():
- iPhone
- iTunes with your chosen song in your library

Method:

1. Open iTunes
2. Right click on the song on the your library that you want to create a ringtone with.
3. Click on 'Create ACC Version'.
4. Once the conversion is completed, you will see a duplicate of your song in your library.
5. Go to View > View Options and tick the 'Date Modified' box if it hasn't already been selected.
6. Out of your 2 songs, select the one that was just modified.
7. Right click on it and select 'Show in Windows Explorer'
8. Rename the file to what you want but change the file extension from '.m4a' to '.m4r'. It will warn you about changing the file extension but just click 'Ok'.
9. The icon for that file should should have the word 'Ring' on it.
10. Click and drag the file into the Ringtones section of iTunes.
11. Sync with your iPhone and boom. You can also delete the file from your library as it would be broken now.

Note! You may need to crop the file to about 30 seconds or less for it to sync.

Cheers,
tom

Hmm, so you changed the file extension to .m4r?

File extension changed no problems, it's there and can see it and can grab it to drag but soon as I take it into the Ringtones section on iTunes the circle with line through it comes up, meaning no can do.

Just to clarify my slow brain - Ringtones in iTunes meaning my iPhone section yes?

No, just double click it to play it. There should be a ringtones heading under music, applications etc down the left sidebar.

First change setting to view file type then -

Change a File Extension

Now that we can see a file’s extension we can change it.

1. Click on the file that you want to change the extension.
2. Wait a second or two.
3. Click the file again.
4. The name of the file will become highlighted. Simply erase the extension and give it a new one.

Try that..

Yep, make sure you 'replace' the '.m4a' with 'm4r', not just add it to the end.

tom.
