Any ideas on cropping the file to 30 seconds? Also, can you choose which part of the song to crop? Dont really want to just have the first 30 seconds of each song as a ringtone.

If you have a Mac use GarageBand. I don't so I can't help you out there because I use Audacity on my Toshiba.

In iTunes right click on the duplicate that you are going to convert, click 'Get Info' -> Select the 'Options' tab and then adjust the 'start time' and 'end time' so that it's around 30 seconds

Vista hides file extensions by default I believe, to stop people messing with things and ruining their jpg's during renaming etc.

In your folder click the "Organize" menu and then click "Folder and Search Options".
On the "View" tab there is an option about 8 down saying "Hide extensions for known file types". Make sure this is unchecked.

Now when you press F2 to rename the file you will be able to edit the file extension.

Hope this helps

I just made some ringtones following these directions and used WavePad to crop the songs. Really simple and user friendly. It practically works like a text editor letting you select parts of the song and copy paste them to a new mp3 file. I have the free version too as far as I can tell (I don't remember paying for it) It also lets you fade in and out and all sorts of other funky things. Highly recommended.
