Pocket lint causes problems with iPhone

So yesterday I went to plug my iPhone into my MacBook Pro. I plugged the usb connector cable into my computer, and then went to plug the 30 pin connector into the iPhone, only for it not to go in properly.

It was sitting up and out a bit on one side... "odd" I thought.

After removing the cable I looked inside the dock connector spot and could see something that looked a bit weird. I did some searching for a photo at high enough resolution to be certain what I was seeing wasn't normal. It looked like maybe something had peeled back near the dock connector. But looking through ifixit didn't help. They have shots of the dock connector and show some tape coverings that might have been it... but not a good enough photo to be sure.

I was a bit nervous about sticking something inside the dock connector opening... but eventually decided this morning to give it a go with a very fine stanley knife.

Sure enough, after a little bit of coaxing out pops a small bit of lint/pocket-fluff. Probably something that's been in the pocket of one of my business shirts - the left overs of someone's business card that's been through the wash 6 months ago. It was in there quite firmly, I guess my connection of the cable yesterday pushed it in nice and tight!

So the moral of the story - keep your pockets clean... and be careful about the fact that the dock connector on the iPhone is a gaping hole where all sorts of stuff could get lodged inside and pushed in hard the next time you connect the sync cable.

I noticed that a fair bit on the first week I got my phone, was a bit worried it would build up inside the iphone or cause problems, but I dunno if my pockets have magically cleaned themselves or I no longer give a toss about it, but it dont notice it anymore and hasnt given any problems so far...
