Should I ditch Optus for Three

Hi Guys,

I am in Perth and have had a lot of issues on the 3G network of optus since switching from three. I find that a lot of my calls drop out and I also get many failed calls.

Optus are happy to end my contract and I can either hand back the phone or pay out the cost of the phone but no termination fees will apply as it was noted that the coverage was poor within 30 days.

I am a Mac user and use the calendar and email .me push functions.

Otherwise it is just my phone. So my options are go back to three with the iPhone or go back onto something like the e71.

Can anyone on three tell me what the push is like? Does it work OK?

I use a few international calls per month and find that the optus cap's are fairly inflexible in this regard as well as not allowing 124yes.

Cheers,

Andrew

I have a sad feeling that three won't help you much. The reception problems on the 3G iphone appear to be 2100mhz related which is what the 3 network is. Also on 3 you have the added issue of roaming on to Telstra and the daylight robbery that entails. Personally I wouldn't touch 3 with a twenty foot pole until they can work out some agreement where roaming doesn't cost (which probably isn't likely).

Sad to say that Telstra is probably your best option as far as reception goes, unless the fix the problems. The data isn't that painful now, it's just the call rates that aren't that great.

Roaming on 3 doesn't cost

I am on 3 mobile in Perth and have perfect reception in and around the city - not to mention have an awesome plan i'm on with my iPhone, which I never come close to going over with both calls, messaging and data each month.

The only time it does cost you, is if you roam onto the Telstra network (from 3) and you start using the internet or any data roaming service. I've been back home a few times to see my family near Shepparton in Victoria, which definately doesn't have 3 mobile coverage - and therefore roams onto Telstra, and I've never incurred extra data costs during this time. I simply don't use the internet or any other data service. Everything else is included in my 3 mobile cap (phonecalls, voicemail, messaging).

In my opinion 3 mobile are great - and for what I want it for it works a treat.

However, if the data roaming could be an issue for you - then definately reconsider going to 3 mobile... but as I said above, I haven't had any problems with extra costs. You've just gotta be careful when roaming... it's not hard.

I have done this, well I'm on the optus $19 cap and use this as my 24 month iPhone payment plan. I have no problems at all with three and my speed is 4 times faster. You don't pay for roaming for calls just data and in Sydney my three coverage is everywhere I go.

So unless you don't live in a three covered area go for it my iPhone experience on three is better and cheaper than optus. Eg $20 for x series gives 1 gig compare that to optus.

Go for it.

It is not so sad, Telstra are actually okay, superior coverage etc...

Why are people so quick to bag Telstra, if they were so bad why would most of the high end business users choose to use them.

People who have a professional responsibility to really check it out and measure every cent, trying to make savings still choose a Telstra plan for their phone systems.

The other telcos will always be behind, justified by the bargain rates...

It's get what you pay for...

Get what you pay for? They charge such an exorbitant amount for data on their NextG network it's ridiculous! Optus - $20/month for 1GB. Telstra - $60/month for 1GB. PATHETIC.

Telstra do offer 1GB for $30/month, however, you need to have a Telstra service already *and* sign up to a 36 month contract, where *only the first 12 months are $30*. After 12 months, you get reamed at $60/month.

If Telstra would let me go on a 24 month contract, with a free 7.2mbit USB modem for $30/month, then I'd move to it from 3, where I pay $15/month (half of what Telstra charge).

There is simply no excuse for what Telstra charge for their NextG network. It should be much more competitive with the competition, but no - Telstra are happy to take advantage of those who don't do research and just fork out whatever Telstra charge. Telstra have every right to do it, they are a company after all, not a charity. However, they won't be getting my money while they commit such highway robbery.

If you already know that Three's coverage is good where you are, go for it.

The speed compared to Optus will blow you away...

I concur....my experience with 3 to this stage has been nothing short of great. Just don't get on the internet or check mail when you roam and you won't incur any extra charges.
