Unhappy Using iphone to SMS

Help...I purchased an iphone for my daughter for her birthday and today rec'd my first bill! Shock horror, $230 of text messages! I thought she texted a lot but thats ridiculous!!! I was so much better off with a prepaid and using 1c texts. What can I do? I know this is my fault for not thinking it through and getting caught up in the iphone hype. Can I unlock the phone and pay out the contract and turn it in to a prepaid in any way????
Your thoughts are appreciated....

You should be able to pay out the termination fee ($1000+) and then you have an unlocked iPhone (I think). Then pop in a prepaid sim. Is my method correct?

The carrier I am with is Telstra. Do you know if you can pay out your contract and then go to prepaid somehow? Heard something about having to unlock your phone?

I definitely don't want to sound rude, but perhaps you could explain to your daughter that she might have to be more conservative with her texting each month.

Otherwise, sure, jump back on prepaid and use the 1c texts

I would imagine they would let you buy out your contract - whatever the minimum payments work out to be over the life of your 12/24 month contract for plan + phone repayments.

Don't imagine it would be cheap - and then you will need to get another (albeit cheaper) plan.

The only way is to pay the early contract termination fee, cancel the contract, take the phone to a Telstra store, get them to unlock it and buy a pre-paid sim.

Us youngins rely on SMS immensely

That's what cap plans are for. I've never had a huge SMS bill.

Ok - your daughter is sending a stupid amount of text (over 900/month).
Move her to a higher plan or something
Get her a second sim card.
Take the phone from her for a month.
Make her get a job and pay for it.

Heeey... I'm still a youngin... Year 12 here

I guess a cap plan would be the way to go. Or look at something like the Optus TurboCharge.

I pay $50 a month for my credit and I end up with about $370 to use plus 500MB to download. Definitely covers as many texts as I'm able to send in a month. More info <here>

You are a bit stuck with your contract. Unfortunately the good nextg coverage means telstra charges more than other telcos. Contact telstra and see if there is a more appropriate plan to be on.

I am on a plan with Telstra that offers the option of paying $5 per month and getting free texts, unlimited.
Granted, it is a business plan, $65 per month

You can request for all outgoing SMS' to be barred from the service. That maybe the cheaper option rather than copping the full termination.

Otherwise, if her Bonus Option isn't already on 50 Free Text you may want to switch it to that:

20c for 10 min Night - For people who like to talk at night.
Pay 20c for the first 10 minutes of national voice or video calls to any other mobile phone on any Australian network, from 8pm-7am, 7 days a week. Better yet, there's no call connection fee.

Free 24/7- For people who call the same number regularly.
Nominate one Telstra mobile phone or any eligible fixed line number in Australia and for the first 3 minutes of the voice or video call, it's free, anytime. There's also no call connection fee. (A $3 set-up fee applies)

Free Text - For people who text a lot of Telstra mobiles.
Send 200 free SMS messages to any other Telstra mobile phone in Australia between 8pm and 7am each night. Plus, all other SMS to Telstra mobile phones or mobile phones on other networks in Australia will be charged at 15c per SMS at all times.

Free 50 Text - For people who text a couple of times a day.
Send 50 free text messages to any mobile phone on any network in Australia (or 50 free Talking Text messages on a Telstra home phone) each month, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.²

My Hour - For people who like to catch up with friends and family during an allocated time.
Nominate one hour of the day or night to receive the first 20 minutes of each voice or video call within that hour - free. You can call any eligible fixed or mobile phone number within Australia any day of the week. (Not available on $10 Member plans.)

Per Second Saver - For people who make lots of short calls.
Only pay for the time that you use. Voice and video call rates are charged per second instead of in 30 second blocks, 24 hrs, 7 days. A 27c call connection fee applies.
Here are the termination charges for iPhone plans:

Code:
Device & Plan ETC Pen 2 (GST inc)
8GB $30 Phone Plan	$670
8GB $40 Phone Plan	$780
8GB $60 Phone Plan	$980
8GB $80 Phone Plan	$1190
8GB $100 Phone Plan	$1425
8GB $150 Phone Plan	$1780
8GB $250 Phone Plan	$2100
8GB $350 Phone Plan	$2100
16GB $30 Phone Plan	$670
16GB $40 Phone Plan	$780
16GB $60 Phone Plan	$980
16GB $80 Phone Plan	$1190
16GB $100 Phone Plan	$1425
16GB $150 Phone Plan	$1780
16GB $250 Phone Plan	$2100
16GB $350 Phone Plan $2100
Each of those is prorated over the length of the contract.

Eg. If you got the 8GB iPhone on a $30 Phone Plan, and you're 2 months into your contract, you pay:

24 months - 2 months / 24 months x 670 = $614

And lastly, it costs $150 to unlock the iPhone through Telstra.
