For those of us who upgraded from a 2G to 3G iPhone

Hey Guys,

When I first got my hands on a 3G iPhone to play with, I was not impressed with the feel of the plastic back or the more yellow biased white point of the LCD rather than the first models slightly blue one.

I love the feel of the Aluminium iPhone and it's easier to keep clean though mine is scratched up nowadays

After a few days I am now very happy with the speedy 3G network, GPS functions and I do feel that the 3G is a simply gorgeous device, the chrome speaker and mic grilles were a nice touch, and the glossy back is beautiful in both black and white (though my mate pointed out that his white one doesn't show the fingerprints as easy which is a plus :P)

I am a bit bothered that I had to shell out the $35 for a Dock which should've been included IMHO because i don't want to lay it down on the desk all the time and it means I can read the screen without having to pick up the phone, not to mention that the phone makes a great bedside alarm.

The plastic looks like it'll scratch very easily, I can't wait to get a cover for it.

All in all I'm very satisfied with the new iPhone 3G, I don't need to hack anymore (though I'll be using Jailbreaks when they're available still) and am convinced that the upgrade was well worth it.

What about you? I'm interested to hear what everyone elses opinions are too!

You know, I still like the slightly narrower 2G iphone. It feels like a tighter/tougher package. Particularly with the aluminium back.

That said I do like the feel and look of the new one. And keeping it in my back pocket is like a constant wipe clean whenever it goes in or out so it mostly looks clean. Though leaving it on the desk on it's back is a concern as that definitely marks it unlike the sturdy aluminium one.

The battery life got me stumped when I first got the 3G but having switched off push and used gps very lightly has mostly sorted it out.

Oh, other bummer about the 3G is that my in car charger is now 'incompatible'!

All told though I love it, it's stlll the best device I've ever owned.. miles ahead of anything else.

I have owned three 2G iPhones and now own a white iPhone 3G.

I still love the aluminium back of the 2G's as it matched the finish of my MBP. It also felt sturdier and after months of ownership, it did not show any signs of use.

Now having used the 3G for a few weeks, I am happy I made the upgrade. I love the look of the white plastic back, and it now feels a bit better in the hand. 3G speeds are great, and make using the internet a much more manageable experience. Having warranty is a major plus.

Interesting thoughts guys.

I've still got my 2G, planning on walking into Optus any day now and upgrading, but I do feel a slight reluctance as the 2G has been a good unit all-round.

I mainly want to upgrade for the security of a plan/insurance, so I do feel this will happen soon.

So why not do it the day your 2G goes bust?

I'm happy with my 2G for now, and I figure I may upgrade when the 3rd gen comes, probably around the middle of next year. Or if the 3rd gen doesn't seem to offer much more, I may even wait for the 4th.

I'm loving my 3G iPhone, mainly due to the increased speeds of data and better coverage I'm receiving. I found the 2G iPhone on Telstra to be pretty poor in terms of coverage, and couldn't stand edge. Now on the 3G iPhone I've had no problems with coverage or speeds, and am loving the applications that are available.

I've handed my 2G iPhone to my girlfriend who's passed it onto her younger brother. It wasn't in the best shape though

I only bought the 3G cause I sold the 2G. I guess it's all the same to me. I prefer 3G though. Nice back. More smudges. But overall a nice kit. 2.0.2.

- Cos my 2G is still valuable now, it won't be worth much down the track or anything once its broken.
- There is too much fiddling/maintenance to keep a 2G up to date.
- I want the security of insurance and a proper data plan for my iPhone.

I'm really happy with my 3G. Better in almost every respect (even if some of the changes are subtle).

Glad I lined up on release day. I've also been able to sell my old iPhone, so couldn't be happier.
