Iphone 3G Car Charger that actually works??

We all know that the iPhone 3G has been a royal pain in the ass in finding accessories that are compatible with it, making hundreds of previous iphone 1st Gen charging accessories useless overnight.

I have been researching for a 3G compatible car charger but it seems even those that have ben reported to 'work' with the 3G actually don't fully charge the phone as they provide less than 1Amp in practise (i.e reports that the phone continues to drain battery while on the charger if the phone is in continues use eg google maps).

I have purchased 2 different USB car chargers from Deal extreme and both don't work.

Can someone point me to some 3G compatible car chargers (plain ones, not FM transmitter/cradle etc) that fully work with the iPhone 3G and are relatively cheap?

$19.95 cigarette lighter USB converter from DSE. Plug your supplied Charge cable into that. Works fine. And my iphone fits snugly in the cradle I had for my old phone.

The extreme Mac ones on the apple store have a life time warranty and a surge protection circuit to protect your iphone, and work fine, and have a pretty BLUE LED when charging... $29.95

if not wanting cradle / FM this is the best option, you can even get the Cig lighter > USB cheaper if you shop around...

Deals Extreme has a few...

and then get yourself an extra iphone/ipod cable while you're at it...

cheap deal extreme one

I tried charging my iphone 3g on one of my friends ones she got from JB-HI fi, it was a USB one but plugging it in did nothing, not even the incompatibility warning. It charged her iPod video fine though.

I think the cable has to have a special "recognition/validation chip" in it's plug, before the 3G iPhone recognises it as a "approved" device. I would assume that using the cable that comes with the 3G iPhone, plugged into any old USB <> Cigarette lighter adapter would therefore work? (unless the chip is in the 240v <> USB adapter - in which case that cable wouldn't work either).

Maybe wait until the Apple store comes with a connector cable that is actually advertised as "Made for iPhone 3G" rather than what is currently available: "Made for iPod Touch/iPhone", which seems to mean iPhone 2G...

It would be nice if someone would come up with some kind of adapter that would allow the 3g Iphone to be docked with existing ipod docks. The fact it can't be used with my existing one really annoys the crapper out of me.

nah the old USB cables work with it fine, from what I have ascertained it may have something to do with the older ipods which originally connected and charged over firewire which uses different pins on the ipod dock connector and charged at 12v. The iPhone can only connect with USB and at 5v.

My previous problem that I posted about was with a USB cigar adaptor thing, with a factory apple USB cable which works otherwise

cheap deal extreme one
I suspect these don't work though. the iPhone requires 1000mAmp to charge and operate completely and these only output 500mAmp per USB port.

I have also tried this one at Deal Extreme and despite being 1mAmp it ALSO fails to work (tried two different ones in fact).

So the only way to be sure that a charger is indeed compatible is by:
-charger is certified on the packaging to work with Iphone 3G (plain iphone certification isn't adequate, it must state 3G as the older iphone charged via the Firewire and USB pins whereas the 3G only charges via USB).
- People can vouch that they have successfully used it with their phone and it worked perfectly (and it must not display "this accessory is not suitable etc etc")
