I hate Telstra.

Too late to the party. Oh well, i'll be moving to Brissy soon so no problem.

And considering it took me 2 weeks to get my iphone (and i didn't get a black one like I wanted in the first place) and I ended sending my 16gb white off due to 2 dead pixels: thats 3 weeks to get my iphone.

Should have just waited. But hindsight is 20/20 i guess.

The per MB rate difference has some significance for the iPhone plans.

Eg: At the moment, they calculate your rate for your existing iPhone plan data allowance based on the per MB rate of your add-on Data Package.

So, currently, a $10/20MB pack gets you a rate of $0.50, so combine that with an iPhone plan with $5 of included data and you get $5+$10=$15/0.50=30MB, or for $10 included data you get $10+$10=$20/0.5=40MB.

In the same way, combine a $29/80MB data pack (@ $0.36/MB) gets you $5+$29=$34/0.36=93MB and $10+$29=$39/0.36=107MB.

Now, if Telstra maintains its current method for determining data allowances, those numbers should change to:

$5 included + $10 pack @10/150=$0.067/MB = 15/0.067 = 223MB

$10 included + $10 pack @10/150=$0.067/MB = 20/0.067 = 298MB

$5 included + $29 pack @29/300=$0.097/MB = 34/0.097 = 350MB

$10 included + $29 pack @29/300=$0.097/MB = 39/0.097 = 402MB

So with the $10 pack you get an extra 73MB/148MB from your included data, while on the $29 pack you only get an extra 50MB/102MB.

Anyway, to use their current iPhone plans, you get:
  • 350MB on the $59 iPhone plan (up from 93MB) and $30 worth of calls; and
  • 402MB on the $89, $109 and $129 iPhone plans (up from 107MB) and $60, $80 and $100 worth of calls, respectively.

It would be interesting to see how this now compares in value with Optus. NeoRicen - care to give us a hand with the rest of it?
Telstra has repackaged its standard iPhone deals so that they now only come with the $10/150MB pack instead of the $29/80MB pack.

And it seems I was giving Telstra too much credit - why use the same formula as you did previously and give your customers effectively 50% and 100% more data when you can just arbitrarily apply the excess usage rate to the 'included' data - so $5 included data in your iPhone plan only gets you an extra 10MB and $10 included only gets you an extra 20MB.

If you're still going to be so stingy with the included data, why not just give your loyal customers the option to use that money for call credit instead? Given your data rates and lack of caps, they're going to need that more than a measly 10/20MB of data.

I was told that the phone plans are not based on data - they are extra add ons you can change as and when you wish without restriction - I assume this also means they can change their data add ons as and when they wish - Telstra is more expensive, but they do have the better network... if people hate Telstra so much just stay clear... I have been a loyal Voda customer for over 7 years but just went back to Telstra because of Wi-Fi access and availability of handsets... the better data plans are not perfect but a whole lot better than the were last week. )

Just to be picky, and off-topic, there were only approx 84 Starbucks stores in Australia to start with, so it's actually 84 - 61 which DOES equal a huge decrease...in Australia

at least its a step in the right direction from australia's worst telco. the greedy bastards have been forced to drop some prices due to the competition - no wonder they want to regain monopoly control of internet access!

lets hope the slight price cut flows down to the prepaid data blocks as well.

A little confused - I'm on the $30 plan iPhone plan, so thats $25 of calls and $5 data (5MB!)....

To get the 150MB browsing pack, do I ask to upgrade my $5 per month data pack to a $10 one? Or do I have to purchase the $10 pack every month ONTOP of my $30 per month?

Help appreciated

I'm on the same telstra plan.

Unfortunately the way I see it you'd have to purchase the $10 pack each month.
Telstra don't seem to recognise the included $5 as a pack. Doesn't even show up in "my data usage". So you end up with 155Mb.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm interested too.

I might have missed this in the thread, but can I purchase one of these data packs to use with my 1st Gen phone and use EDGE, or are they only available to people on an iPhone 3G plan.

Sadly, you're only slightly wrong and not completely wrong.

Previously, Telstra applied your per MB rate to the included data - hence the $29/80MB data pack on top of $5 included data got you 93MB and on top of the $10 included data got you 107MB.

Now Telstra seems to be applying the 'excess usage' rate on to included data - so $10/150MB (with $0.50/MB excess) on top of $5 included data gets you 160MB, and on top of $10 gets you 170MB.

If they'd stuck to their old formula, you'd basically be doubling your data allowance (see my figures above) - so it's a pretty disappointing development, if only in principle (since your likelihood of using that much - and consequently, the risk Telstra would take in offering it - would be minimal).

[EDIT] And to clarify the original question - if you do not purchase the data pack, your 'included data' is used at the pay as you go rate of $2/MB, so you only have 2.5MB with $5 included and 5MB with $10 included - pretty weak.

Thanks for clearing that up.
