Another interesting fact folks might not know about Telstra phone plans. You can change the size of your data pack anytime without penalty and if you go down in size they pro rate the month and give you the diff. Also once per month you can change your bonus option like 15 cent text to free calls to selected number or the other avail bonus packs.

before i start (i am a fanboy) but -
Ii'm glad i couldnt be bothered to wait in line for an iphone. i was going to port to optus on the basis of the value in the included data.
as mention in earlier replies telstras coverage and speed are second to NONE...
i get service in underground car parks in the city , lifts and out bush. friends on optus just dont get the same coverage. also not 100% sure of this but i thought i read somewhere that the telstra next G speed is faster than optus and voda

Sure, the difference is about $16.50 between the two Optus and Telstra plans I was looking at ($29 'yes' plan w/250MB data, 23 minutes calls vs $29 Telstra plan w/2.5MB data +$10 browsing pack [or two], giving me 152.5MB/302.5MB data, 22 minutes calls) - but the coverage of Telstra is soo worth it!

Exactly, This is good news for me too as i was going too buy mine on telstra. Now i get better data plans... Not too mention the hotspots scattered around where i live =D

Could these data allowance increases be because of the decrease in Wi-fi hotspots, since many Starbucks Telstra hotspots are no more?

To be fair, I did a speed test at [T]Life Melbourne and got 200kbps on a NextG iPhone and only 100kbps on my Optus iPhone. Of course, that was in a Telstra store so take that for what you will.
However, at the end of the day, I still feel that the value for money on Optus (particularly in relation to calls, if not data) is more than worth the very minor annoyance of it being slightly slower or having slightly less coverage, both things that have little effect on my usage.
But I'm glad for Telstra loyalists and those with no choice due to coverage that they finally have some reasonable data packs. Now for them to come on board with call rates and/or caps!

More likely due to lack of sales and loosing clients.

arnt optus promising the same coverage as telstra by Dec 09 ?
the only problem with it is that they are putting 900Mhz towers out in the bush so if you travel out to the sticks youll only get GPRS which for me is no biggie..

Looks like no change to the $5 data pack, surely they could add a little more?
Don't think anyone is going to stay on the $5 data pack, I think i will upgrade to the $10 Data pack

I'm on a business plan ($29 data pack) and the changes haven't showed up the business site so does anyone one know if the upgrade in the data allowance will apply to those plans? Cheers.
I am really sorry if this is a stupid question but i have looked and looked but haven't been able to find anything that said either way. Thanks!!!!

Might get better results giving Telstra a call tomorrow - doubt anyone here is going to have an answer for you.

byrnsie it's probably to soon... give it a day or two. But as far as I was aware the datapacks apply to all customers, regardless of business or personal.
