Oh fuck, $29 for 250mb is actually reasonable.
Too bad Telstra, you missed out. Maybe in 2 years time yeah?

Well at least those who got hold of an outright have the flexibility to go back if they want to. I honestly don't see my data being much over 300mb a month once the novelty has worn off. Though it is lots of fun uploading photos to facebook. I can see myself doing that constantly.

Wow that's great news. I'm planning to keep my 1st gen iPhone when i get back, and now there's a better reason to be with Telstra.

Telstra Prepaid also has a new product offering - Talk & Text More where you recharge your account with $60, you get 250 minutes call time, 250 text and $60 to be used on prepaid services. So probably you can use the $60 for the data pack.

$60 per month is a little expensive but you can find cheaper ways to recharge your account with credit to sweeten the deal.

Meh. Not that excited, as shown below with comparison of my current Optus plan.

Optus $59 VS Telstra $59

Handset Cost
Telstra: $279 for the 8GB
Optus: $2 p/month on 24 month contract = $48

Included Calls
Telstra: $24
Optus: $350

Included Data
Telstra: 300MB
Optus: 500MB

Sure, their coverage rocks. But unless you are in a rural area, it's nothing to really get excited about. Optus still kick Telstra's butt.

Considering Telstra are the only fuckers that you can get signal with here, this is excellent news!

I'm confused. How much is 1GB of data on a business plan, using an iphone?

How much data would a heavy user need?

Wow, I have been using the iphone's data solidly since the day iPhone was released here, and have only chewed through 30mb of data out of my 250mb per month plan. I wonder how anyone could go through 300mb!

Thats heaps. Depending on heavy, 500MB should be more than enough. I'm an insanely heavy user, and I reckon I'm going to get close to about 400MB per month. I would be very surprised to hear stories about people racking up 1GB on data.

Still pretty terrible, but at least the NextG network is somewhat useful for people that don't have a choice now.

The decision to make the $29 plan LESS valuable than the $10 is completely baffling though.

How is the $29 less valuable than the $10? If you download 300 MB on the $10 plan it would cost $85 for the month whereas on the $29 plan it would cost $29?

The per MB rate difference has some significance for the iPhone plans.

Eg: At the moment, they calculate your rate for your existing iPhone plan data allowance based on the per MB rate of your add-on Data Package.

So, currently, a $10/20MB pack gets you a rate of $0.50, so combine that with an iPhone plan with $5 of included data and you get $5+$10=$15/0.50=30MB, or for $10 included data you get $10+$10=$20/0.5=40MB.

In the same way, combine a $29/80MB data pack (@ $0.36/MB) gets you $5+$29=$34/0.36=93MB and $10+$29=$39/0.36=107MB.

Now, if Telstra maintains its current method for determining data allowances, those numbers should change to:

$5 included + $10 pack @10/150=$0.067/MB = 15/0.067 = 223MB

$10 included + $10 pack @10/150=$0.067/MB = 20/0.067 = 298MB

$5 included + $29 pack @29/300=$0.097/MB = 34/0.097 = 350MB

$10 included + $29 pack @29/300=$0.097/MB = 39/0.097 = 402MB

So with the $10 pack you get an extra 73MB/148MB from your included data, while on the $29 pack you only get an extra 50MB/102MB.

Anyway, to use their current iPhone plans, you get:
  • 350MB on the $59 iPhone plan (up from 93MB) and $30 worth of calls; and
  • 402MB on the $89, $109 and $129 iPhone plans (up from 107MB) and $60, $80 and $100 worth of calls, respectively.

It would be interesting to see how this now compares in value with Optus. NeoRicen - care to give us a hand with the rest of it?
