Are iPhone 3Gs developing cracks?

In what appears to be an increasingly common problem, hairline cracks are beginning to form on Apple's new iPhone 3G.

i reckon keeping a bodyguardz or invisible shield on the back will help stop this occurring, mind you i have no evidence to base this on

LOL. Considering that cracks probably occur from the inside out....heat perhaps? Or heavy damage? My iPhone is unprotected...only for a slider leather case. The back still looks shiny (as the velvet lined case cleans it everytime you slide the iPhone in and out of the case.

**off topic**

Which case you using?

Im using one of the Foof pouches, but it is a silk type lining so doesn't clean the iPhone casing.

Yikes. Those pics are the worst I've seen so far. Guess they're going to show up more on the white than the black. Should be fine though if its happening on the underneath layer of plastic. Less chance of your phone falling to pieces :P

Still, it's pretty bad, and gives another reason for people to seek out a 1st gen iPhone. Never heard too many problems with build quality on those ones.

If you read the entire thread on Mac Rumors forums, you will notice that most people noticed cracks 1 or 2 days after the purchase and some even on the same day, which makes me believe that cracks were present even before the purchase - faulty batch or transport abuse..?
My 2 weeks old white iPhone btw; doesn't have any cracks and I do carry it in my pocket all the time...

I picked up my iPhone 3G 16Gb Black on launch day and since then I have only used it for 3 days with headphones.

But I have a very visible crack near the headphone port, either through movement of the headphone jack or potentially because the headphone jack may have been slightly larger than the headphone socket.

Either way I am very *(&@*(& off that my brand new phone is damaged after such a short period of time and more importantly normal usage. The phone has not been dropped, put in my pocket, sat on, etc.

And I can assure you it didn't come out of the box from Apple this way.

All my other phones be they Nokia, Sony Ericsson and DoPod Windows Mobile.

I specifically wanted to use my iPhone 3G as a replacement for my current phone and my iPod Touch 16Gb but if I can't use it through fears of it cracking that plain ***** *&*!

I have been rather busy at work so haven't been into the Optus store I picked the phone up from but based on the number of occurrences of this type of damage I will be going in just to report it. Hopefully they might replace it, if they don't I will be on the phone to Optus and Apple.

At this stage I am back to using my iPod Touch 16 Gb in fear of exacerbating the current cracking issue.

I have not noticed any damage around the silent mode switch, but I admit I have not used it that much to date.

No probs!!

klif - I've noticed that I really have to force in my headphone jack into the headphone port of my iPhone. I've only done it twice, and I really don't like forcing things in or out of my precious iPhone.

No visible cracks though.

Also, I've changed chargers as well. The supplied iPhone charger has no side grips for easy connection into the iPhone. I've used my 1st gen nano charger and give the sides a squeeze and it pops on nicely, without tearing it out and potentially scratching it.

Not quite sure what your referring to, you mean the dock connector of the usb cable?

All the cables should be the same.
