I'd like to see how thick the plastic actually is but the back of the iPhone is not removable. (?)
I have some background in plastic moulding manufacturing.

No they are not the same. The older iPod ones have depressible sides so you can insert it into your iPod easily.
The newer (and shorter) dock connectors for the iPhone do not have these sides, so you just have to jam it in and yank it out.

I have a tiny one near the headphone jack - but it's so small and only visible under certain light, I've ignored it. It's inevitable that a phone will get some blemishes - as long as it works, I don't mind.

I'd have to say that there are definitely some build quality issues with the new iPhones - but that's hardly surprising given the number they've had to pump out of the factories, and Apple's somewhat lacklustre track record with these things.
It doesn't fit this thread exactly, but the silent switch on my 3G is definitely a problem. It's very hard to switch, and feels (and looks a little) like it's loose and hasn't been glued on properly. Anyone else noticed anything like this?
I guess the positive is that Apple are generally pretty happy to replace products when there are any issues. Let's hope the iPhone is no different.
Oh, and I've also noticed that the headphone socket is extremely tight. Doesn't feel quite right forcing the headphones in...

That phone looks fairly dirty and scratched up for 2 weeks worth of use though.
Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of mine. I had 2 or 3 small cracks developing from the headphone socket, 1 between the chrome bezel and the power switch, and multiple hairline cracks at the bottom of the phone.
That was enough for me to warrant taking it back to the original store of purchase. I am currently waiting on a replacement to arrive. If it happens multiple times, I might have to reconsider my future phone being a 3G model or not.

That's my concern - there's no guarantee that the same thing won't happen with a replacement phone - after all, they are made of the same stuff.

Damn
My wife just noticed a crack in her white iphone, along the side of the headphone jack, tho on the back of it not towards the chrome bezel. Mine seems ok still... Hopefully apple do a recall or at least repair/replace under warranty.

I sent mine off on Tuesday to get replaced. I rang Telechoice in Belconnen on Friday to check on the status. They said that Apple had approved a replacement for me and I will see the new one on Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully this one wont have any cracks/dodgy pixels

no problems here on my black model. As far as I can tell and see.
@xpv43,
Silent switch is harder to flick on 3G compared to 2G. And headphone jack is quite hard. But it sounds and feels the same as my iMac's headphone jack. Makes a little click on insertion.

I'm taking a magnifying glass when I pick up my iPhone, although it might be that I need to give it some use before the cracks appear.
I've got my Bodyguardz right here waiting, but I'm not putting it on until it's had a couple of days use. Not that I think it will save me from the cracks problems. They seem to be manufacturing issues - cracks around openings and sharp curves.
I have an invisibleSHIELD for my G3 Nano and I swear by it. I just chuck the Nano anywhere without fear of damage. I tried every case and none of them work.
I would have bought invisibleSHIELD for the iPhone, but there doesn't seem to be an Australian distributor any more. The Bodyguardz Australian price, while expensive, was cheaper than the ApplePhoneShow discounted price from the US.
So I guess I'll be testing Bodyguardz this time. They look similar, but I think I'd rather have military grade protection over automotive grade protection. Time will tell.
