Can I do this? Porting number from Three to Optus and putting another number on Three

Hi,

I'm currently on a mobile contract with Three and have 11 months still to go. Currently on a $49 plan.

What I want to be able to do is sign up to (most likely) the Optus $59 plan with the iphone, then, port my number that I have with Three to Optus BUT keep my current contract with Three still going and put a different number on my existing Three contract (this will be my Dads number and he'll take over my current Three plan).

So in perhaps simpler terms:
Before:
Dads number - his old phone (prepaid - unsure of network)
My number - nokia 6288 (Three)
New number - iphone (Optus - have not bought/signed contract yet)

After:
Dads number - nokia 6288 (Three contract going on)
My number - iphone
New number - non-existance

Is this possible to do?

why don't you just buy the optus contract, and swap sim cards.

Ok I'm going to show my naivety in mobile phones here but wouldn't having my three sim card in the iphone I get from optus mean that anything I did on the iphone be charged on my three contract. I wouldn't be able to use the internet and all other iphone goodness with my three sim in there would I?

Well isn't 3 internet capable? The SIM card determines the phone number etc. so yes the iphone would be operating on 3, and your dad on Optus.

Well that's not exactly what I want to do. Ideally I'd like to port my number from my three sim to the optus/iphone I get and port my dads number from whatever sim he has to the Three sim, avoiding cancelling my current Three contract because I'm porting numbers.

I don't THINK this is possible, but i really am not certain. I remember someone asking this question over at OCAU and I am pretty sure the answer is no. Maybe try posting there? There is a thread just for 3 and a guy who works for 3 posts a lot and he would know.

I think you need to be a member to post though.

not sure what your asking to much.
but you cant port a number to a contract that is currently active
meaning if you have the number currently
0412 345 678

and your iphone gives you
0431 21 21 21
you cant swap that number with the one above

I understand what you want to do, and the answer is no. I'm quite sure that if you have a plan, the number associated with that plan has to stay. The only way to port your number is to cancel your current plan. If people could port their numbers, and get new numbers on their existing contracts, there probably wouldn't be so much fuss when things like the iPhone come out.

Not possible. When the old carrier receives a port-out request, the contract is terminated. If you first request a number change on the old contract, the old number goes into quarantine for 6 months.

I'm afraid it can't be done.
