Why no call for an Optus boycott?
Like most people awaiting the release of iPhone 3G, i've been frequenting MacTalk a lot recently. One thing that has surprised me, considering how most AppleTalkers like to 'think different', has been the enthusiasm for Optus and their iPhone 3G plans. Forgive me if I have missed recent threads about banning Optus, but a cursory forum search yielded nothing.
I'm amazed no-one's yet called for an Optus ban. Maybe because some facts are not well known, or maybe iPhone 3G fever has no known cure!
Anyways, prompted by Kuma's thread on boycotting the Olympics, here's some info about Optus.
Firstly, I should say I have used Optus in the past, but no longer do so. At first partly because of technical and service difficulties, but mainly because it is now owned by the Singapore Government (since 2001) through its investment arm Temasek Holdings. The same government that has links with the murderous Burmese military junta. The same government that hangs drug couriers yet gives hospital treatment to drug dealing Burmese generals.
Despite living in a modern rich western democracy, it seems one's voting power is less effective than one's consuming power.
Knowledge is power.
Think different.
Think before you buy.
Say 'No' to Optus.
OK, rant over. Now more importantly, Telstra or Vodafone for iPhone? Telstra has free WiFi hotspot access and NextG, Vodafone has better call/data credit pricing.

If you discount optus, you have to go vodafone surely...
after 13 years with telstra, optus offered the iphone in australia with reasonable pricing and embraced data usage, ported me within 6 hours on launch day and gave me an iPhone 3G Black 16GB within 5 days from launch...

I'll selfishly take the lower iPhone prices.

You have got to be kidding me.
You're arguing for the boycotting of a company over its parent company's nation of origin, yet you're willing to purchase an Apple product.
From the United States.
With their whole war on a Noun, invasion of sovereign nations and neo christian xenophobia.
The hypocrisy must be dripping from your tongue.

Um, the Singapore government owns Optus. Apple is a public listed company. Spot the difference.

Oh, terribly sorry, I wasn't aware Apple didn't pay tax of any description to the US government. I'll be on my way now.
Not to mention, Vodafone isn't exactly spotless, so why not boycott them as well while you're on your moral crusade.

For me as I have been with Optus for more than 6 years now and have never had any major issues apart from getting sent out an item which was on their couriers end.
I have had pretty much really good customer service when I have required it.

I am sure we can find something wrong with every company on the planet if we took this line of thinking.. people will always vote with the best value for money option, and in this case its Optus. I am surprised you can live in any western society if your take this thought process to every purchase decision you make. Time to head to nimbin and live like a hippy I think LOL.... TIC...
