2G on iphone 1st gen

How do you get 2G on an unlocked 1st Gen iPhone? Again, my friend needs to know, but isn't signed up here.

no when he bought a 1st Gen and signed up for pre paid he didn't get 2G with it. (GSM network!) Is this right? shouldn't he have gotten a 2G compatible sim card if he signed up for pre paid round Jan this year?

Ah do you mean he didn't get GPRS/EDGE (pretty much just GSM Internet). Most prepaid options don't have this configured and for good reason as this can get expensive without a plan. Virgin has 1GB for $15 but you will have to subscribe to a Calling plan so do consider if it is worth it for your friend.
