Telstra first bill

Hi long time lurker firsts time poster.

Just a heads up for those on Telstra, my first bill is in and even though I intentionally stayed on the Telstra "free to browse" pages i.e Yellow pages, Whereis Weather ect. I have been billed for it.

After talking with Telstra this morning apparently those wap pages aren't free for iPhone users but Telstra are still happy to sell you data packs to browse pages that they advertise are free, in big writing on the top of each page.

Cheers Pete

Sound typical of the big T. I've had an issue recently where i have been receiving emails and SMS's from Telstra for a bigpond account that doesn't even belong to me and has excess usage. It will be interesting to see the next bill and see if they are charging me for someone elses usage as well as my own!

How much have they charged you? Free is Free in my books... i would argue the case, if they still refuse then i would involve the TIO

I'm going to follow it up this arvo i just don't have time this morning to deal with the run around that i know I'm going to get. The bill covers the first 5 days of having the phone and the data component is only $5 but its the principle.

Basically when I first bought the phone I deleted the APN address from the phone, turned off every push service i could find and told the phone not to fetch new data, I don't need the mobile data, everywere I go I have wifi access.

Out of interest I decided to check out the free sites that I had heard about both on here and from the salesman from the store. The fact that they had free to browse in the top corner and the fact that I read the conditions meant that I felt safe.

Anyway if Telstra are no good I will contact the TIO.

Cheers

Make sure you mention to Telstra that you will be contacting the TIO.... there's no "reasonable" reason for Telstra to say that certain free pages are NOT free on certain devices, that's just deceptive.

Actually, maybe that's not the best thing, since if Telstra back off and give you a refund, they won't change their practices. If you go to the TIO, they may get someone else (ACCC?) involved to tell them to stop being dicks. I don't really know these things normally work...

9/10 times if you ring them up about it and have a bit of a huff and puff at the guy on the phone you can get some kind of credit or something from them... Especially if yo uare a long term customer they are more than happy too try and help you out.

But as for having it free on some devices and not others that IS a tad unfair but then again iphone users on telstra do also get the benefits of free WIFI at all telstra hotspots... maybe this is their way of countering that,...

And as stated above if you cant get anywhere with them try contacting the Telecom Ombudsman.

@ peterc

What do you mean:The bill covers the first 5 days of having the phone and the data component is only $5 but its the principle.

Is this the $5 data pack that you have joined or is it for data usage.

If it is the $5 data pack then that's just you monthly data pack in advance.

There are several threads about this on whirlpool. It's being looked into and is apparently going to be rectified but in the meantime they should credit you back. If they don't, demand to speak to a team leader. Point them to the bigpond mobile website that says the bigpond mobile site is FREE to browse on any next g mobile.

Deco20: Sorry I should have made it clearer. I used my original 5mb credit that comes on my plain plus an additional few MB which resulted in a data bill of just over $5. Really it is a trivial amount but it is the principle of paying for something that is advertised for free.

Mitty: Thanks for that info I will look into it.

Have spoken to Telstra on this, and I can confirm that the information you have is incorrect.

When you speak to them, ask straight up to talk to an iPhone specialist and you will get the correct information.

You will be informed on screen Everytime you are moving away from the free to browse pages, and warned that you will now be incurring charges.
