iPhone sync via Wi-Fi

It just occurred to me today how ridiculous it is to have to plug the iPhone into your Mac to sync your calendars and contacts.
So we have this new whizz bang iPhone that has 3G/Wireless/Bluetooth but I have to plug it into my mac to sync. Sure I can use mobile me but that cost money for data that I have on my Laptop 20cm from my phone.
Does this not strike anyone as insane that iTunes does not have a "connect to iPhone xxxx via Wi-fi) If I have to upload 10 GB of Music or Podcasts I can understand that the cable might be a better option but for day to day syncing......
Is this just me or....
my 2c while I procrastinate at work.

This was rumoured to be in the 2.0 release but unfortunately didn't eventuate, so hopefully will be something we see in the not too distant future.

What is the point of even having wireless then?

I think it is probably because there is OS stuff going down the wire and it less likely to be an interupted connection and therefore less likely to be a corruption of the OS

If you always sync in the same place, buy a dock. It will set you back $35 for the iPhone 3G Dock (Apple Store (Australia) - Apple iPhone 3G Dock), but however it's a great alternative than using the standard "plugging in of a cord" to sync.

Syncing via Wi-fi will eventually come, but in my opinion I'm happy with using my dock, seeming I only sync with my iMac at home.

It is in my pocket. So it makes sense not to have to take it out and plug it in where I have to unplug and put back in pocket. But this is more an intellectual exercise rather than a practical one. It has wi-fi so why no use it?
The OS update is a good reason not to do this but then just do that via wire and updating iCal ect via the air.
Seems to be sensible to me.

I think the lack of this feature is to try and encourage more people to buy into the whole mobile me thing, as if you have this you can sync over wifi!! So I wouldn't hold my breath for this in 2.1....

If I had an iPhone, I too would like this feature so I could use the cable/charger and keep that in my bedroom for when I forget to charge my phone

I've only got USB 1.1 so WiFi sync would be rather nice.

Don't you need at least USB 2.0 for the iPhone to even work?!
