The problems of Iphone 3G on Three
I have been using my unlocked 3G on three for just under a week and here are some of the problems I have discovered that may explain some of the reasons why Three didn't get the iphone:
-iphone is very resilient and sticks to 3G...much more difficult to get it to roam than my old phone...in fact it usually goes "No service rather than roam. I have to force it by turning 3G off. Then it stays on 2G despite turning 3G back on.
-Turning off 3G AND Data Roaming does NOT turn off your risk of roaming onto Telstra for data on EDGE and paying $1.65/MB. This is very concerning and quite different to some of the earlier reports I had read here.
I urge you to test your phones and report back as from my experience it seems the iPhone doesn't quite behave as well as expected on the Three network.

Isn't there that weird call forwarding thing as well? When you make a call that is.

On the second point, your phone will remain on 2G until you make a call or switch it into airplane mode and back out.

Perhaps this is why 3 didn't get the iPhone?
I notice this on my iPhone too with Optus, the iPhone is quite slow to change between 2G/3G

Only problem I'm really having with my iPhone on Three is that I can't seem to get my Three email working properly. Very odd.

Yep that Call forwarding pop up is also quite annoying. I have tried many things but there is no solution unless you jailbreak the phone and modify some files in it but I'm not prepared to ruin my warranty for.
Yes the switching fom 3G->2G and vice versa is very poor. Not sure if this is just with Three or if it occurrs with other providers.
iPhone persists with 3G even in difficult circumstances but I have a strong feeling the almost non existent switch to 2G (goes "No service instead") will lead to LOTS of call drop outs. Haven't confirmed it yet as haven't had to roam.
Three used to overcome some of these problems by custom modifying the firmware. However that isn't possible with the iPhone.
Keep the reports coming guys.....
Would be interesting to see the pattern of behaviour of the phone on Three as it appears different to early reports.

My "old" Nokia N70 on 3 always had this issue... maybe it's a tech issue rather than an iPhone issue?

Yeah the call forwarding thing is a minor pain. I can't seem to get either my mobile me or three email to work. It's constantly trying to connect, but never does.
It would be helpful if people posted some tips here as they find solutions to these problems.

Sending:
Add smtp.three.net.au as an outgoing mail server. It only works on 3G not via WiFi. It will automatically try it if the others fail.
Incoming:
mail.three.com.au as POP should work over WiFi (and maybe 3G)
mail three.net.au as IMAP only works over 3G
3services as the APN

Certainly clings to 3G where my old phone used to roam to 2G. But I prefer it that way. I have never had No Service.
It has only roamed once, when I entered the city loop. But it was back on 3 within 5 minutes - way faster than my N95.

Yeah. I have noticed that eventually it does connect to EDGE data. Maybe I should move to a plan again with a small amount of roaming data included. Hopefully the new X-series plans will have this like the old add-on packs did.
I have logged three different bug reports related to this - if get fixed would it would help us with this.

I have had very little problems using a 3 sim in my iPhone. The only real issue is that deleting emails (three emails) is sometimes a pain.
Also a tip for your incoming settings type in " Unix path "under the IMAP Path Preference. also ensure your server ports are both set at 143.
Hope this helps. Any other tips please feel free to share!
Cheers

To be honest, I would say it performs better than I expected. Sticking to 3G is a great thing for me.
I do want to see my roaming bill though. I just went into the basement at Myer and it popped over instantly to EDGE. But I really wanted to send an email. And then another. I went upstairs and it had changed back to Three within 4 minutes.
This is better than any other 3 phone I have had (On Three I have had e606, A835, A1000, 6680, N70, N95). And for any existing Three customer these behaviours are expected and well known.
