Hi Decryption,
Is there any way of installing Installer v3 on my iPhone instead of v4 which came pre-installed on my pwned iPhone 3G. Reason being I want to play Tap Tap Revolution on my iPhone (not revenge because I want to play my own songs). The thing is I can't find the installer file on Installer v4. So, is there any way of downgrading to v3 or another way of installing Tap Tap Revolution.
Thanks in advance,
Chris.

Dunno man, I just upgrade the things to v2.2, not offer support. My suggestion would just be to turf it all and start fresh, so you get the latest version.

Make sure you drop a few $$ to the EFA. They need all the support they can get right now (freakin' Conroy).

Dear decryption,
i'm new here, came across your thread while googling and puzzling over an iphone question.
it may be that i have a useless (for australia) iphone, but am very happy to donate to EFA just to clarify that.
(and anyway: looks like a great organization).
my girlfriend was given an unlocked iphone in hong kong. the question is, is it of any use in australia? the reason i suspect not is that it seems to be an EDGE iphone. what is not clear to me is whether EDGE matters, and whether EDGE/3G is a hardware or firmware or software or simcard issue. i don't really understand what "generation" of iphone means.
not sure if it clarifies, but the model is MA712LL, and currently is running 1.1.2. It accepts my iprimus simcard for making calls, but (or course?) not for connecting to the web etc. what i'm not sure of is whethr it would work as a proper iphone if signed up with with optus/telstra etc.
any advice/guidance would be hugely appreciated, and will donate to EFA now, just in appreciation of your help for so many others. a great thing you're doing.
regards, martyr

Hi and welcome!!! If it is unlocked and will take your iprimus simcard then it will be fine to use in Australia. The iphone you've got is the first generation and I think why it won't connect to the internet is maybe because the APN settings aren't configured correctly for the network you're on, go into settings, general, network, edge and see what the APN is, I'm not 100% sure on this but try putting in "internet" without the quotes into the APN field and see if it will connect to the internet. But one thing is that if you don't have a data pack attached to your plan, data is VERY VERY expensive!!!!!! I'm sure decryption will be able to help you much more than I have but this is just my understanding of things.
Edit: I just had a bit more of a look on the iprimus website and one other possible cause for it not connecting to the internet is that internet/gprs hasn't been enabled on your account. "Wireless Internet
Using the GPRS network, Wireless Internet delivers high-speed data transfer between the Internet and wireless devices, using a mobile handset as a modem.

hey byrnsie, thanks for the hello and thanks very much for the information.
i did call iprimus a while ago about this. they were pretty useless (and very nasty). my memory is that i was convinced in the end that i couldn't use the iphone (as email/browser) on iprimus. but i'll call them again, find out as much as i can about gprs, before bugging you guys further.
thanks for the heads up re data costs. i figured i'd sort out connectivity first, and then worry about plans.
may i just ask one thing? i thought for the iphone that one had to choose one of the few particular networks: optus, virgin, telstra, etc. is that only for 3G?
regards, martyr

If you get a iPhone 3G you have to choose one of the major networks (telstra, optus, virgin and vodafone) to get the phone and then you can unlock it (pay the network provider up to $150 depending on which telco you are with) and use it with any network. The 1st gen iphone was only sold in the USA with one network and there was no official way to unlock it so people would buy the phone and use software to unlock it, which is why if you update the phone with itunes it will be locked again. But because your iphone is unlocked it can be used on any network in Australia except 3. But if you want to upgrade the phone to the latest software you can do it yourself which is pretty easy but if you don't feel comfortable upgrading it yourself you can send your phone to decryption and he will upgrade it to the latest software (2.2) and unlock it. 2.2 which has heaps of benefits such as the App Store which has 1000's of application for the iphone and heaps of other great things. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask!!!

well, much to my surprise and delight, the iphone now works fine! so, i'm not sure i'm still on the right thread, but please let me ask while i'm here (and more to the point, while you're here).
1) what i've got is a "first generation" iphone which is a permanent hardware thingo, regardless of updates? that means i'm always on edge/gprs, and thus the 3g restrictions/benefits don't apply? (i assume the point of 3G is speed?).
2) i'm happy to give the upgrading to 2.2 a go. so, step 1 is to go to itunes? this updates it but also locks it?
3) the next step is to unlock it? can you point me to the unlocking instructions.
4 )in future, if there's a worthwhile software update, i just repeat steps 2 and 3?
thanks tons, for the help. hugely appreciated.

The point of 3G is speed, it can sometimes be as fast as home broadband and no updates will allow a first gen iphone to use 3G. With the unlocking/upgrading, are you using a mac or a windows computer?

Ok, well I don't really know much about upgrading firmware 1.x.x to 2.2 but this guide seems pretty good, I'm not sure if it will work upgrading from 1.x.x as I think the guide is written as if you were upgrading to 2.2 from 2.x.x. Hopefully someone will be able to shed some more light on upgrading, this thread may be worth having a look at to. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

And the 1st gen iPhone was sold in other countries too, not just the US I know the UK was one of them, and a couple of other countries in Europe...
