Something is borked - you shouldn't need to use Ziphone.
Chuck it in DFU mode, use Pwnage to make a custom 2.1 firmware and away you go.

You aren't supposed to open them up. Just copy them onto your desktop and Pwnage will find it automatically.

Your phone will work fine with iTunes 8 - so you can upgrade fine. But if you're going to upgrade to 2.1, make sure you follow this guide: BabySteps Guide to Upgrading 1st gen iPhone to FW 2.1 with Pwnage

Why no unlocking of iphone 3g's? There are still plenty of reasons to unlock it. Netshare is one, iBlacklist is another. I can't believe Apple don't allow these on the store in Australia, its rediculous.

Mostly because it's a piece of piss with Quickpwn and there's no urgent need to (i.e: your phone will still work without it). I do it because people with 1st gen iPhones, that can't unlock, are left with a useless device.

But I'm starting to change my mind about it as Apple are shitting me with the app store.
