What is a decent reading for reception? When going into field test mode my iPhone shows -93 and that is in Rowville VIC which is covered by 3G.
I don't think I have ever seen my iPhone show over 3 bars and when at home I get 'call failed' a lot when trying to initiate a call.
Prior to this I've had BlackBerry and Nokia handsets which have had much better reception and performance on both 2G and 3G.
Is my iPhone handset at fault here and should I look at asking for a replacement?

i think -70, -80 are 5 bars
-90something, -100, -110 are 1 bar.
i think the highest you can get is around -50 or -60 if you are standing next to the tower.

Doing a little more testing I'm getting around -100 too. Is this something I should take up with Apple?

How do we put the iPhone into testing mode? Oh, and how do we stop it testing too.

You can press next to the carrier logo to switch between dB and bars.
Press the home button to get out of the Field Test mode.

I've updated to 2.0.2 yesterday and I've noticed no difference in 3g reception. Still getting 1 bar of 3g reception in most places I go. I havent seen NO SERVICE come up on it, although thats not an every day occurence so I couldnt say if that is a result of updating to 2.0.2 or not. I'd say its just chance and not necessarily the update.
Update 2.1 from all the articles mentioned yesterday seems to be the rumoured updates for 3g reception...

I would have said maybe 2.0.2 made a difference.. but if it did it was a very small one.
I handed my phone back to get a replacement today. We'll see if the new one helps. I'm not too hopeful though.

I guess the fact that apple are acknowledging that there is a problem is at least a step in the right direction. Hopefully future updates will fix these problems once and for all.
It's pretty much the only (major) thing letting down an otherwise fantastic device.

from the apple discussions, allegedly a test by a swisscom engineer -
Apple - Support - Discussions - iPhone 3G Reception Problems? You're ...
iPhone 1: NO SERVICE
iPhone 2: -106 dBm
iPhone 3: -103 dBm
iPhone 4: NO SERVICE
iPhone 5: -106 dBm
swisscom Field test equipment (Nokia 3G transceiver): -72 dBm
swisscom Field test equipment (Samsung 3G receiver): -74 dBm
swisscom Field test equipment (S-E 3G receiver): -76 dBm
swisscom USB 3G stick, HP Notebook: -71 dBm
swisscom PC-Card (Dell Notebook): -79 dBm
and again, alone this single test probably doesn't carry much weight, but when coupled with another reports suggesting similar findings (the scientist guy who didn't want to be named...) and the hundreds of user experiences going on, it starts to look difficult to deny.

Hmmm... not good news that. I kind of saw it myself. My iphone was on my desk struggling to catch and hold 3g and roaming .. so I took the sim out and popped in my old nokia 6210. Instantly 4/6 consistent bars of 3g goodness...
