On Tesltra & 2.0.1.
Since I got the iPhone 2 weeks ago, all reception has been great. Went to Queensland last week, all reception great. Get back to Perth, no service, both at home and in the CBD. And no 3G. All I did was sync as normal.
Why would it suddenly drop off?
Are these the same symptoms that everyone else is getting?
Do I need to get the iPhone replaced?

Optus are going to log a report and give me progress updates, they have left a voice mail on my phone asking me to call so they can make a record of the issues I am having.

I don't know if this has been posted here yet or not:
Chuqui 3.0: Two little tidbits..
It may be the drivers in the 3G chipset, which are outside of Apple's control. This wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Well Optus called me and said I was quite well informed regarding the issues at hand
He made notes of the issues I was having and will submit a report and (supposedly) provide me with updates,

iPhone 3G reception
In the CBD today in the building above Flagstaff station. No 3G at all all day. Otherwise 3G is on/off all the time and
"Symptoms seem to be -
- dropped calls
- "No Service"
- slow to change between 2/3G networks
- slow data transfer rates
- consistantly 1 bar of reception (in areas with coverage known to be better than this)"
see vandozza 19th July
On Optus
no 3G on Mt Hotham
hardly ever any 3G on Mt Buller
no mobile reception at all on the road from Mt Slide to Yea
3G reception in Kew flakey
Something needs to be rectified whatever it is.
The 2% figure is based on what complaint?
Cheers

the 2% figure supposedly comes from steve jobs himself, in a letter to a customer that had complained directly to him (s.jobs@apple.com - or something to that effect!)
i think it's like the 1% of mobieme customers that experienced the outages, when in reality it was more like 99%
edit - also i believe that melbourne was again having optus 3g issues again. like a service outage. so if this is the first time you have noticed problems, it might not be what everyone else is complaining of. however if you are having problems consistently then welcome to the club

Hey Guys
I thought this is interesting.
My first 3G iPhone I got had the famous apple cracks in the plastic.....
I live in bundy so we dont have 3G coverage only normal coverage... I live on the edge of town and with my first iPhone i was allways on "one bar" or "NO service" in the house..
Okay
2 Weeks later I went back to the phone store to bitch about the cracks( Just the cracks not the service.. I didnt think the service thing was a problem). They sent it away and sent back a new one.
Now I actually have 2 bars and havent seen it say no service!
So for some amazing reason this replacement iPhone fixed that problem?
So im thinking batch problem here

Well after a long chat with some helpful (or at least well-meaning) Optus people today they have agreed that Apple should replace my phone So, my iphone goes on a holiday tomorrow. I doubt it will fix it, but then Mattcooper's story above does make me wonder. It has occurred to me that maybe they have a fixed batch they they give where there are problems.. but who knows.
Anyway the interesting thing is that they have given me assurances that even though my coverage guarantee runs out this Thursday they will give me 5 days to trial the new phone during which time I can still return it if it's no better.
That sounds fair enough so we'll give it a go.

sounds like a good enough compromise!
don't forget to ask for some credits from optus! we hear they are giving them out!
it will be interesting to see how you go with a replacement unit. i have tried 2 and have seen no difference.
the reports on apple discussions are that people have tried iphones from weeks 27-31 and report similar problems. (hence i don't expect much of a difference - but let's try to be positive! )
obviously there are people out there with perfectly functioning iphones though! lets hope you are one of them.
when do you pick up your replacement?

We can hope.
Mine goes in tomorrow. I don't know when I'll get a replacement. Hopefully less than 5 days.
