heaps of people have done the survey over the last 2 days, given all the recent publicity.
we are up to 184 respondents. (with even 9 helpful "international/USA" based replies! - lol)
Optus - 127 responses, 14 reply "no problems" = 89% reporting "problems"
Voda - 20 responses, 1 reply "no problems" = 95% report "problems"
Telstra - 21 responses, 13 reply "no problems" = 38% report "problems"
Other - 7 responses, 1 reply "no problems" = 86% report "problems"
* keep in mind that a forum thread like this is like a hospital ward - you are only there if you are sick, know someone who is sick, work there, or have a morbid fascination. the results of this survey will be skewed because of this.
still it's more complaints from the T users than I expected.

Hey guys,
Called Optus today. The tech guy was really helpful, but the guy i talked to about my plan charges was a complete ass hole. How was i to know that you get chareged twice for your first month?
Any who i was complaining about only having a GPRS signal in my area and in the city both of which should be densely 3G.
Any way typed my address into his computer and it came up that i had 3G coverage and I'm like 'duh. And said it was a chip problem, of course i was expecting this.
Then i asked what frequency i should have 3G reception on in my area thinking it could be 800MHZ and of course the iPhone cant pick that up, and he has 2100MHZ. From this i concluded that its defo a problem with the iPhone. He said take it back to the store and send it off to get fixed!
And I'm like "you wouldn't take back your first born, don't ask me to take back my iPhone!"
It annoying because of the first month of service i will have only had my iPhone for like 2 weeks. I should make them refund handset repayments for the first month, or for the weeks that i have been paying it and not had it! LOL
Bloody Apple (bless there heart but) come on guys make a decent product! I have flash backs to my original iPod Nano, its pretty, but rarely works! I had four iPod Nano's under warranty. haha

G'day All,
I am deeply saddened by this problem with 3G reception. I am a died-in-the-woods Apple supported since my first purchase of an Apple IIe. I am now embarrassed to let my friends and family know that I am experiencing such difficulties. I rarely even see the 3G connection symbol let alone have access to this network. I purchased the iPhone through Vodafone and I can see a vast difference in 3G service between it and my previous Blackberry on the same network.
I am currently using my phone on my home wireless network and 2G for calls. This is not good enough - those of us that have shown Apple nothing but loyalty to be treated so shabbily. I am paying extra for the privilege of using 3G which I am unable to utilise.
Come on Apple 'fess-up' why is my phone not operating as advertised. I am one of many throughout the world experiencing the same problem, we are not imagining this problem - it is very real.
Let us hope that Blogs such as this will stir Apple to answer the pressing questions being put about this beautiful product.
Rgds to all - Martin

If we are looking at two issues causing the reception issues. Software and hardware.
Will Apple just go with just the software update, if that is enough to get by until the next iPhone version release? Then in the new version update the hardware for a full fix.
That solution may for example provide a 50% improvement, but not 100%. Hopefully not.
I'm sure they'll try and avoid if at all possible a full recall, as that would be massive.
Also potentially delay release in the remaining countries.
