however - i have been on the SAME NETWORK for 12 MONTHS with a NOKIA PHONE and have had NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. no changes in location, no changes in expectations. i just want the iPhone to work.
i do love apple products, but its hard to blame Optus, when i still have a Nokia on the same network running perfectly sitting RIGHT NEXT TO IT. NOW.

This is key. Different phones usiing the same network and SIM card getting vastly different results. You can't blame the SIM, and you can't blame the network.... there's only one thing left.

There's definitely something wrong with the Radio Software in the iphone. At the moment, I'm sitting at my desk in the melbourne CBD with No Service on Optus, which is clearly ridiculous. When I do a network scan, it says "unable to load network list". WTF? And at other times, when I am on a network, trying to do a network scan takes forever and may not come up with any results, which is also ridiculous.
So there's definitely something wrong with the way it looks for and locks onto networks. And these same problems occured regardless of using Telstra or Optus.

Optus have revealed that 3G networks are down in Melbourne and Sydney at the moment.
Link to story
I was using Safari in a lecture this morning when all of a sudden the phones reception died as it tried to connect between GSM and 3G.

Update from Wednesdays field tests by Apple.
The engineers found that while the signal was vastly weaker on Optus than on Telstra, they couldn't replicate issues of "No Service" or call drop outs. More contact will be made with them on Monday. I've offered as much cooperation with them as possible. Apple has seen this thread, and they do realise that alot of us are having issues. At the moment though, they're scratching their heads trying to figure out what's going wrong.
On one hand their field tests show there should be no major issue making or receiving a solid phone call, on the other hand they have photographic evidence to the contrary.
Patience would be greatly appreciated while Apple does some more field testing. They will get to the bottom of it.

I've had my 16gb black iphone on Optus for just on 7 days now and the general feeling I get is the iphone mobile reception is weak compared to my old mobile (Sony Ericcsson V630i).
Using this same Optus sim card between the 2 phones in the same location I get 4-5 bars on 3G with the Sony Ericsson, and only 1-2 bars and changing between 2/3g on the iphone.
I also get some patches of no service on the way to work and at work (North Sydney cbd), so getting a lot of voicemails when when with my other phone its getting near to full signal strength.
Hopefully an update is coming. I've never ever complained about mobile reception in the 10 odd years of owning a mobile until now getting the iphone this past week.
I love the phone, just not the reception!

are they seeing the classing 1 bar reception in areas that should be stronger than this?
and what's the photographic evidence they have been able to collect?
i find it fairly easy to replicate a dropped call, start a call on 1-2 bars 3g, then walk indoors... easy
very rarely for me switches back to 2g properly. this is also a situation where other phones have been fine.
i've also noticed in console.app quite a few crash logs that have been sent to apple from itunes.
does anyone know how to read these?

This is total disaster from where im sitting today.
I just swapped over from 3 Mobile sony ericsson to Optus 16g Iphone on Thursday
I live in the very heart of Bondi Junction in Sydney more towers than you can poke a stick at. Im looking at two phones right now the 3 mobile 5 bars not a single drop out in 3 years here.
Optus i phone - no service, no service, drop outs, text arriving late, no bars, one bar, what a joke!!!!
Im straight back to the apple store bondi junction monday to give it back.
It does not work!!
