iPhone Mail Headache

Evening all,

I can't believe I am about to start an iPhone thread...

Got my 16 GB iPhone on Friday - all smiles.

Then a couple of days ago I stopped receiving email on my iPhone, even though I know I am receiving mail, then all of a sudden, Mail on my iMac is not recognising my password. Especially after I try to retrieve mail on the iPhone. iPhone will not send mail, iPhone will not retrieve mail.

Got in touch with Apple, after much click here, check that etc. and not getting anywhere they finally suggested manually re-inputting all of my email accounts into the iPhone, if that fails, reset all settings, if that fails, restore. Well I have done all of that.

iPhone will only retrieve mail if I reset all settings before trying to check for email. When it does retrieve email it also retrieves the 400+ from my junk and previously viewed messages and I have to delete them all again...then it will refuse to retrieve mail after this and I have to reset all settings again ... vicious circle starts. It says connecting... and that is all.

Got onto Internet provider, they are telling me that the password problem is coming from the iPhone.

I am banging my head, I go away for 6 weeks tomorrow and I want to receive my email on my phone, but no matter what I do, it is not working.

Does anybody have ANY clues? I would appreciate your input and advice. Perhaps I also need to contact Optus, although I cannot see how that would help.

TIA.

1. Restore iPhone.
2. Talk to your ISP.
3. Check passwords.
4. Change passwords.
5. Check SMTP servers and POP/IMAP servers.
6. Create new accounts with Gmail or MobileMe or something, as a test.
7. Try at someone else's house.
8. Try on a PC or different Mac.

All out of ideas now.

I think I am beginning to detect the problem...

If my mail is open on my Mac when I try to access Mail on the phone, that is when my password fails to get recognised....

So, are you saying that your max simultaneous logins is 1, perhaps?

It would seem so.

Mail on my phone is working now as long as I don't have mail open on my Mac, if I do it all goes haywire.

Username and password box means your auth has failed, in this case it's because you're logging into a POP server and POP servers generally only allow 1 connection at a time to ensure things don't get all messed up mid-operation.

IMAP however supports syncing of multiple clients in realtime and hasn't got this limitation - as a support technician for a well known webhosting company I heartily recommend you change your mail account settings both in mail.app and the iPhone to connect via IMAP instead.

Are you using POP? I used that for my TPG account and if I access it from my iPhone, it will not function in Mail. I can't explain why, but I've since disabled that account from my iPhone - as I much prefer to receive and send email from Mail instead of my iPhone. The only account that has worked on both Mail and iPhone have been IMAP (Gmail has it).

Do I need to get settings from my ISP for that?

That's because the vast majority of POP servers do not allow multiple connections - because the protocol is not designed with this in mind

IMAP > *

turn push email off on your iphone.

that should fix it

as all email servers need a log off period, so if it checking every 5 or 10 minutes the server doesnt detect that your have loged out.
