Unlocking my iPhone....

So I bought my phone here in Japan. Works a treat very happy with it.

When I return home for the occasional visit my folks have a spare sim card lying around.

Would Telstra organise an unlock for my phone to use on their network? (that's the spare SIM card - I have no choice).

No telstra can only unlock phones locked to their Network. You will have to get your current provider to unlock it.

That's correct, otherwise everyone will be flooding to Vodafone for their $75 unlock rather than Optus or Telstra at $80 and $150, respectively.

Try another SIM.

I am willing to bet it is locked. Or show us the website of the carrier you bought it from. Or store. It should mention something in the terms and conditions.

I spoke to Softbank.. and they said nope my phone is Japan only and wont work with other SIM cards... so it looks like when the time is right.. and assuming the hackers have done their bit.. I will have to unlock it myself.

Also, iphone-dev are saying that if you want any hope of unlocking via pwnage etc, that you shouldn't update from 2.0.0 firmware as 2.0.1 etc are a baseband update which may be unlockable. At the moment according to them there's no guarantee that the 3g will be unlockable via anything but legit means.
