My view on GPS, SMS Tones, Optus Free Wifi, Photo Roll, iCal sync colors

Hey guys...well, me being the early adopter bought a white 16 gig iPhone, it's on Optus, no issues.
It runs well at home on the Wi-Fi when i'm charging it, but the niggles I have (and I'm sure they've been posted before, I just wanted to lay it out straight !) are :

iPHONE STUFF
  • GPS - I drove down Eastlink (thanks Bracks !) the other day, and Google Maps is sorely out of date, it's not on the ordinary map list, and the satellite shows dirt roads where they were digging it all out a few months back. Also, there might be 6 instructions to get to your destination if you choose "directions", but you have to manually change it - would be better if it sensed where it's drawn the line to follow and update the next instruction. I know it's not a Tom Tom, so let's hope they or another company introduce something similar.
  • iCal & Calendar Colors - When you create a calendar on the Mac and sync it via iTunes (not with MobileMe involved, cause THAT syncs fine !)...it will change the colors used for the different calendars once it reaches the iPhone. I'm sure this will be addressed in an update, but unusual they didn't catch it the first time.
  • Ringing - Edited, I realise now the phone rings while the headphones are in, but not when SMS's arrive - they only go via the ears !
  • SMS Tones - Yes, I'm hoping it's a simple software addition to be able to let you set your own alarm/reminder and SMS sounds, I have a Simpsons one I used on my Palm Treo (after a lot of wrangling !)
  • Photo Roll - all good, but would love to be able to name the photos before they get uploaded to the computer, would make more sense if you're showing people later on.
  • Wallpaper Page - Wouldn't it be nice if you could hit another button on the home page to show just the wallpaper page and lock the phone (or not lock it if you so desire ?)

OPTUS STUFF
  • I went to Gloria Jeans at Brandon Park today (believe it's a Wifi spot) - and there was a "yes Optus" Wifi connection, however when i went to use it, it told me the internet didn't exist Odd....am i doing something wrong ?
  • I AM NOT A FAN OF 124YES - especially considering that when i go to ring 1223 (Telstra Directory) I get a message saying "you should try 124YES at $1.10, plus call charges" - you do get to speak to Telstra after a short delay and don't get charged for the Optus message.
But according to tech support, you CAN'T stop it, it's a system-implemented thing - it should be switchable in my opinion.

Righto, rant over until I think of some more.

* Ringtones while headphones are in: I would've thought that if you had the headphones in you'd only hear the phone ringing within, but it doesn't - it's also on the phone itself, which causes a bit of chaos when you want to keep the noise down (on a train, late at night in bed !).
I think the problem here, is if people store their iPhone with headphones plugged in at home they'll miss a lot of calls if the ringer isn't on the external speaker.

Yeah true...just thought it's weird, all the other phones i had with earphone/mics cancelled the external speaker out.

I've heard the same reasoning before hand, and it's personally saved me twice since Friday.

Here I thought it DIDN'T ring with the headphones in. I was wondering why the phone didn't beep for SMS and mail and then realised the headphones were still plugged in. Is ringing different?

Must be, I just checked and mine does indeed ring with the headphones in.

Well, I guess that sort of makes sense. Ringing requires urgent action, messages don't

I totally agree with the GPS issues - is it just me, or is the Australian version of GPS a watered-down Google Maps? I couldn't even drop two pins!

And I don't get a blue dot showing where I am - it's just a large-ish area, showing the entire suburb. Musn't be enough satelites or cell towers around Cranbourne (SE Melbourne).

It's not so bad, but it's definitely not what I expected.

you get a large area if it is running off cell towers to triangulate the position, this is generally not that accurate, if you have clear view to the sky then gps will be used and target will change to a glowing pin that shows pretty much exactly where you are
