3 SIMs are fine. You just need to follow these instructions to enter "3netaccess"

Interesting, not that i need my iphone unlocked really. But do have couple of mates with 3 network that would like to know this.

Sorry to be the pessimestic, but go to the APN settings, and enter '3services' then browse in Safari to http://three.net.au (You can only get here from a 3 SIM card) then take a screenshot and post here :-)
Hold down home key then hit the lock/power button, the screenshot should be in your photos folder now. for the screenshot

He says restore. When it goes through the initial activation it will receive the carrier unlock.

I'm on the phone to Optus, they are saying my sim might be too old. I might try the restore as I'm not confident they really know what they are on about.

Basically, once you get the SMS..
- Turn off the phone
- Put the 3 sim in
- Connect to iTunes
