Not the case. Confirmed here and by my mate who is in Kalgoorlie and has no 3G at all so is stuck on Roaming.
Not quite sure how the iPhone defines "Data roaming"...

Guys, i just received sms to connect iphone to itunes, and i done it already, so now my iphone is unlocked. My question is, when i restore the iphone with vodafone sim card, why it didnt ask to update the carrier setting? And also, i cannot view or edit my APN setting.

Telstra Unlocking to 3
Hi Guys
When I requested the unlocking from telstra she said to just keep plugging it in to itunes to find out if the unlock had gone through. After doing a RESTORE today a dialogue box came up with " There is an update to your Phone Carrier Settings...would you like to install?"
I installed the update and went through the sync process then powered down and entered my three sim (from about 22 months ago now) the phone doesn't say invalid SIM or anything but I am getting no service and can only make emergency calls.
So I'd love some help answering the following:
1. Is my 3 SIM too old?
2. Was the "Phone Carrier Update" not the phone unlocking?
or 3. Does the Telstra unlock only allow you to use Optus and Vodafone and Telstra and noboby else like I was told on the phone?
pr 4. Have I done anything wrong in the updating and should it actually have worked?

That doesn't necessarily mean that the unlock came through. For example, I had the same message on my optus, and all it did was install some optus zoo stuff and change the carrier display name from Optus to OPTUS

Thanks heaps...that is somewhat of a relief. I guess we are still wiating to confirm that telstra phones unlocked will work on three, which surely they can

What do you mean by "it still works when Roaming" ??
Are you referring to the phone call functions working? If so then yes it should as that's not affected by turning Data off.
What is meant to happen when you turn roaming data off is that you will no longer be able to access the internet BUT can still make and receive calls via roaming onto Telstra.
Can you confirm that the above is indeed the case??

No, calls work (thats obviously what I expect)
But I can go into safari and pull up three.net.au and google.com (and yes, Wi-Fi is disabled, as you can tell by that not working from the real internets)

I had numerous problems with Optus when requesting the unlock, not with their prompt answering/transferring me, the problem was the lovely lass in the call centre was having some problems getting to grip with the english language, and as you need to read them your IMEI to confirm who you are, it took 7 TRIES of reading out the number before she got it right....

This is how I tested:
When I go "General" --> "Enable 3G" to off and wait for it to connect to Telstra and then try to browse. I get this:
I haven't been able to get the phone to roam in liftwells. Instead it stays on Three with just one bar.
Unusual, because my N95 would roam in these places and stay roaming for a while after. I guess the thresholds are set differently. (I prefer it this way anyway)
I'll test some more if I notice it roaming by itself and let you know.
UPDATE: Same behaviour on different user's SIM sent in the March 2005 SIM card update.

To be honest, I can't answer your question about the APN settings. If the phone is unlocked, you should see it under Settings somewhere. I have no idea why you can't. Also, I think the notification to update carrier settings has anything to do with the unlock itself.
....of course, I could be wrong. I'll be getting my Optus iPhone this afternoon.
