Can someone confirm this?
Have NOT received the unlock message, BUT have unlocked via restore??
Thanx in advance
|
I hadn't received the SMS yet, just went and restored settings and downloaded it again presumably with the carrier unlock

You obviously paid for the unlock, right?
Because I doubt I can just whack my iPhone in and restore, then it'll be unlocked.

this is correct. it's just regular firmware. anyone can get this firmware by doing a restore. it's 2 versions greater than the shipping firmware.

Thank you very much.
So i presume that people who's applied for unlock DONT have to wait for the confirmation SMS.
Because i've lodged an unlock request and still havent received yet... and i'm going overseas tomorrow

Tryandbyte just made Giz(AU) for us all.
WELL DONE TRYANDBYTE!
LINK
"Up until today, there was absolutely no way of knowing whether or not an unlocked iPhone 3G would work on other networks like 3 - even 3 themselves had no idea. Fortunately, thanks to MacTalk.com.au forum member tryandbyte, we now know that you can, in fact, have your iPhone and eat some decent data plans too.
It's hardly the cheapest option, or the simplest, but if you purchase an iPhone 3G outright and pay an unlocking fee to Optus (It's $80), you can update your iPhone to work with other carriers.
If you're interested to see more screengrabs and read all about the unlocking process, head on over to the MacTalk forums."
WOOT!

Could this possibly work for 1st gen iPhones aswell??
Say I rang up Optus paid $80, told them my IMEI, would my iPhone then be unlocked??
It would be awesome if this worked , as I can't afford the 3G as yet

Doubt it.
They know about the IMEI. It would be from AT&T 1st gen stock. Busted.
They sell you an iPhone and they record the IMEI. They know it's theirs and they will unlock it. If Optus didn't sell you it, then they're not going to unlock it.

This is true. When I called to order my 3G this week, the guy was well aware I was on a 1st gen iPhone as he could tell from the IMEI.

Synced, nothing. Synced with a non-Optus SIM, nothing. Restoring with a non-Optus SIM now. I wonder if I'll have to restore again with my Optus SIM to switch it back - I sure hope not.
