Problem with Bose is that they use really shitty drivers in both speakers and headphones. The reason they've gotten away with it for so many years is because most of their speakers are active, as opposed to passive. You can make any active speaker sound alright, even if you have terrible quality drivers.
Bose sound alright if you don't compare them to anything else. I have a pair of c. 1985
Bang & Olufsen Beovox MC120.2 speakers with a decent Sony amp, and there is no comparison. Pretty much any vintage three-way passive speaker will beat Bose, and most modern systems. Bose stuff sounds pretty harsh in the higher frequencies, and quite unnaturally bassy in the lower frequencies.
I don't mean to bag anyone for their opinions, every person likes a different type of sound. Bose have some pretty nice looking gear. I recently won a Bose SoundDock Portable, and I use it when I go on holidays because it has a sweet battery life when not plugged into mains, and it's really portable.
Anyway, I seem to have strayed from the topic. The moral of the story is this: they don't make 'em like they used to.
