Is it a case of different buds, different response ? I'm not impressed for $150.

UPDATE: They have now been throughly repacked/antiseptically cleaned and returned to Apple Store, Chadstone under their (very cool) 14 day return policy - no questions asked. I explained as a matter of course that it was going to damage my eardrums more than provide some "aural excitement" (not those words !) due to the canal buds having to be pushed right into the ear - and I need my ears for my work as a radio dispatcher !

I'll just wait til less invasive headphones with a clicker/microphone come out.
I have to agree about the UE super.fi 4vi's =\

I went and bought the UE 4vi's and Vibe Duo's to test them both out (gotta love that 14-day guarantee refund policy)!

The UE's were fantastic at blocking out sound, even on cityrail tin cans and the highs and mids were very clear. However as bigmouth said, bass was lacking, even with the EQ on.

Vibe Duos had awesome bass (woo!) but maybe a bit too overpowering, while the high and mid range sounded sounded a bit.. distant? (can't think of how else to describe it). The earbuds didn't fit as snug as the UE's; my wonky ears don't go well with their earbud design

When I returned them, the guy mentions that he has the sennheiser mm 50 ip ones, so I try them thinking that it couldn't hurt, and ALLELUJIAH!!

These fit just like the UE's had and blocked sound brilliantly. The highs and mids were clear, couldn't notice much difference with the UE's, and there was definately a noticeable change when EQ bass was on. Though they weren't as bass heavy as the vibe duo's, it seemed like a halfway point between the duo's and the UE's, so now I'm happy!

Only gripe is that they didn't come with a case Anyone know where I could find one?

I have now had these just short of 6 weeks and they are sounding better and better. Quality is good, only complaint I have is that it can take a few goes at using the button remote to skip tracks. Button works great for pause and accepting a call... so maybe it's the user??? I dunno... anyhoo, these phones sound AWESOME!

I hate the stock headphones, at least the ones that come with the iPods, so much so that my iPhones ones just haven't seen the light of day. I'm consinuing to use my Sony monitor EX85's which I find fantastic.

Being that I catch the train to and from and have the phone in my hand when headphones are plugged in I haven't felt the need to get a proper headset with mic, with normal headphones plugged in the normal mic picks up your voice pretty well anyway :P

If you're looking for cheap disposables - that's what I'm beginning to believe earphones are, you can do worse than Griffin Tune Buds Mobile. They make a creepy clicking sound when you seat them properly, but I think they're harmless.

They have reasonable sound and isolation, for the money - balanced lows & highs, if a little 'coloured'.

Kmart and BigW stock the non-iPhone version, so hopefully, they'll get the iPhone version soon??

Anyone know of an Australian distributor/reseller for the Mobiles?

As for earphones being 'consumables'... Nobody takes better care of cables than me. I still have the first guitar cable I ever bought (1973), a curly guitar cable (if you know what curly's are like, they're notoriously delicate) and this one's been everywhere with me - on the road, in the studio for more than 35 years. (And it's still the best sounding cable I own.)

... but I use earphones for many hours a day, every day & no matter how much care I take with them, the jacks just don't seem to like being put into pockets connected to the ol' iPhone. Right angled jacks seem to last longer, but they're not indestructible.

I don't mind killing the $2 Reject shop buds, but the $100+ ones hurt when they die. I'm starting to believe that they're all a consumable item - you use them, you'll kill them eventually. Maybe i need a scottevest, they have pockets for iPods and probably treat them better than 'jeans' pockets.

How much are those Griffin earphones from KMart and Big W? I wouldn't mind getting some. Are they the Griffin recommended retail of $40?

The NON-iPhone ones at K-W are about $39, but remember they don't have the mic & switch. I think the 'Mobile' price of $40 is US dollars.
