I have used 180MB thanks to youtube. But folks, becareful with this because your free 1 months internet may not be apply to your account yet because it may take up to 14 days. So from 26 July, then it will be definately free. Prior to that, it will be deducted from your plan allowance and that would depend on your first billing date to see how much allowance you have. I hope my first billing date would be very late.

Um, I have used 16MB out of a 850MB allowance. I think I'm safe even if there is no free period.

I think by that they mean you will be charged and it will take up to 14 days to reimburse you

63.6MB Since Friday, plus 4.2MB Uploads I've used 67.8MB. 500MB is 16.12 a day for a 31 day month, looks like I'll only just make it.

and my other concern, is how acurate the iphone data usage meter is compared to optus data usage meter, seeing as we cant check data usage online.

Yeah it's proving harder then I thought to chew though a lot of data... that's a positive! 99 per cent of the time it's on wifi anyway so a big data plan doesn't seem necessary really... I guess if you are careful about your data use and have access to wifi at work and home then any of the carriers would be fine.

You can with Voadafone, and if you already had an account with them, your billing cycle will be set, I have 500MB's to use before the 20th!

Is there any way to check the billing date?
I'm starting to get worried. My device was in standby mode for the past couple of hours - nothing was running (no Safari, no Mail, no third-party apps). I came back and turned my device on to find it was a little warm and the battery was down from 50% to 10%. It had sent/received just under 200MB and I have no idea what it was. I would hate to have to pay excess, simply because the free month hadn't kicked in and I didn't have much allowance due to an early billing date.

All this data info is really good to know -- keep it coming! For those of us who haven't yet got our iPhone, this is very useful when choosing a deal.
I think YouTube will make a huge difference, but even 10MB a day goes over the 250MB Optus and Vodafone plans. Looks like that 500MB Optus is more and more the sweet spot.
That said, the existing Optus business plans look hopeful if you're planning on signing up another family member... oops, I mean colleague. You can share your 1GB for $20 (or 2GB/$45, 6GB/$60) between all the phones on the same account. They have cap plans, but you can share voice credit as well as data and potentially get much cheaper call rates than on a cap, so the yes plans could be OK too.
Optus - Small Business - Plans & Rates: Mobile
If they're promising something more special for iPhones on business plans, I'd look at getting an ABN if you don't have one.

That definitely doesn't sound right as the iPhone OS specifically doesn't allow extra background processes. You should have a chat with Apple.
