Just a question: If I can find another Optus retailer that does have stock, is there any way to get them to give me the phone I'm waiting for? I.e. cancel my existing worthless contract and sign up with another one or such.

Probably depends on whether or not they are a franchise. Franchise stores are effectively businesses in their own right. So I think you might have trouble getting the phone from elsewhere.

I was considering this option. If I could do this, I'd head straight to the Apple Store in the city now and pick up a white one - if they still have them in stock?? - on the same Optus plan I originally signed up for.
I'm so fed up with waiting and my local Optus not having any information at all. The guy looked mostly confused when I asked him about my phone yesterday :/ They just keep telling me "next week" or "a few days".

I've been calling every day since I ordered it (Sunday the 13th). They keep on telling me 3 weeks wait. They keep on getting 8GB iPhone but no 16GB.

Already rang the optus store to ask the same thing.
You need to sign a contract in the Apple store.
Spoke to Apple as well who confirmed.

well my store told me yest they were only receiving one shipment a week now on Fridays...and lo and behold I call them today and ask if any rainchecks are in "oh yes" very cagey about numbers and colours I was meant to be 2nd in queue...but I guess I can't lose today...either it comes in, I get it and drop my complaint with the TIO or it doesn't and I let my complaint ride...see if they call.

Just ask them to convert it to a prepaid for you then you can take it anywhere...

Right, just got of the phone to optus. As telechoice have yet to supply me with the iphone I can cancel my contract and retain the number and the fee to cancel will be waved. Which is $516.18
