Erm, most of the complaints are from people who were affected by someone digging up one of Optus' cables. If it had been a Telstra cable it would have been just as bad.
And if you "get what you pay for every time" wouldn't you actually get some decent data with your Tesltra plans?

It was interesting to see some of the companies that were affected this morning too. Jetstar, Qantas, Commonwealth Bank. Wonder why these icons of Australia aren't with Telstra? Oh, that's right... you get what you pay for...

my 'no service' experience with Optus was the result of the mobile number i had selected at the time of picking up my iPhone being allocated to someone else in another state.
the issue was resolved by returning to the reseller concerned who setup me with a new SIM and a new mobile number.
the reseller mentioned to me that there were a lot of people in the same boat with this problem. he explained it away as the telco's system 'not coping well with the influx of new activations' on Friday.

Optus coverage just kicked back in here in Kedron (northside). It's been a quiet day that's for sure!

the iphone killed Optus. My phone has been showing no service on and off since Friday. And then today, boom, the whole state of qld goes down.

Interesting. When I turn on 3G, I get no service, but turning off 3G and I get service just fine (and GPRS).

It was quite amusing to get to school today and fnd that practically no one's phones worked. The rumor going around was that the school had put a "reception blanket" or "signal jammer" across our campus becuase they were sick of students using their phones. I thought "Yeah guys, that's EXACTLY what's going on..." :-| haha

Was interesting listening to the radio today... supposedly Optus may be up for a LOT of $$$ paying compensation to business customers, however they may wriggle out of it due to a clause about the timeline of when they have to make a repair.
IMO, sure, it was BAD, but if it was caused by a 3rd party, then I don't think they should be held to blame... Most people seemed to be back up and running within 5 hours... that isn't too bad...

Err, what made this incident interesting was the fact that Optus didn't have a functioning backup link in place. The backup they thought they had didn't work. *This* is where the incompetence lies.
Cheers
Steffen.
