iPhone 3g and existing iPod accessories

This is interesting :-

iPhone 3G Incompatible With Many iPod Accessories -- iPhone -- InformationWeek

Here, we have an iPod alarm clock - generic thing I bought online. Works great with the iPhone 2G (charges, music plays, even though it says its not designed for it).

iPhone 3G doesn't charge, but does play the music. Still, should be charging.

I don't understand or agree with the statement about firewire in the link above - my understanding was that firewire iPod accessories had the ability to fry the first gen iPhone?

Anyway, report your findings here - what works, what doesn't?

I just ordered mine, so I'll be annoyed if my supertooth doesn't work...

I have a set of speakers that are meant to charge + play ipods and when I plug in my iPhone it won't charge saying it's not compatible.

Also I have the firewire wall charger from my old first gen mini and that won't charge it. So all my old accessories are useless

Oh and my boyfriend has a FM transmitter/charger and it won't charge either.

so is this the same thing as the proprietary chip in the video out?

if so, seems pretty cheeky. You'd hope there would be a software fix, even by a 3rd party after unlocking becomes available....

3rd gen iPod dock seems to charge and play music with 3g phone but gives incompadabilty warning when first connected. The 3rd gen iPod was firewire but the supplied usb cable seems to work fine. I think may buy a 3g dock just to be on the safe side. Well done apple, extra $35 out of me

I think the iPods measure resistance between two pins of the dock connector to identify an accessory - some have found modifying their accessories has made them usable with the iPhone.

My car stereo died and have to get a newie.

Newie will have to be iphone compatible for the impending arrival.

I want something that I can hook the iphone up to.

Question is... Does anyone know of a head unit that will sync to the iphone either via cable or bluetooth, that can play music from the iphone and also mute when a call comes in and allow hands-free conversation?

I'm going up to Strathfield on the w/e but if anyone has any experience and/or suggestions, I'd be mighty appreciative.

Cheers.

We have a Bose Sounddock, a Tivoli IYIYI radio stereo and A Cygnett speaker - none of which now work with the 3G iPhone. (Well, not terribly well, and they won't charge the phone).

Even if we wanted to replace all of these with iPhone compatible devices (a very expensive exercise), there are very few actually available yet. The other problem is of course that we now have to choose, either iPhone only accessory, or compatible will any iPod, 2G iPhone, but not 3G.

Grrr, not happy!
