windows
1. Copy an mp3 and paste it somewhere else. in itunes, get info, change the play time to something less than 40 seconds. (eg 0:00 to 0:40)
2. Convert this shorter one to aac
3. Find the file in the itunes music folders, change the extension from .m4a to .m4r
4. Open it and it should appear in itunes ringtones ready for sync-ing

From my searching, the best site or place to find or MAKE iphone compatible ringtones is Audiko

I'm amazed at how many songs they have on there.. AND that you can get them in m4r format

Very nice.. added a few choice cuts for my collection

I made the following audio loop using Garagband and iTunes. It's the Run-DMC song Mary Mary of course.

Download here.
