iPhone 3G APN settings?

Hey all

I am trying to locate the iPhone 3G's APN settings for GPRS.

It used to be inside Settings > General > Network or similar.

It is not there any more?

I am trying to disable GPRS traffic so that I don't get charged by Vodafone ($1 for 5 minutes).

No I do not.

It is a 2G SIM as far as I am aware.

I had this same SIM inside the iPhone 1st gen and was able to find the APN to disable GPRS.

iPhone 3G also has GPRS fall-back so I don't see why I can't disable GPRS too (and 3G disabled).

That is a bad thing I think... since I have no way of getting out of being charged for the data.

I suppose I'll just leave 3G mode on (killing battery?). I don't have 3G data plans either.

We'll just have to keep an eye on the bill... my icon (when 3G is disabled) is a blue square like on the old iPhones but now it has a circle in it.

Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network -> APN

I was concerned like you so have deleted the Telstra APN entry too.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Scott

Thanks Scott, but I don't have that at all? It is an iPhone 3G, too.

Yeah I don't see it either on my Optus 3G iPhone when it was there in the 1st gen iPhone. 2.0 firmware thingy perhaps?

I looked at the firmware and it says 5A345.

5A347 is apparently the latest one?

I just bought my iPhone today though. And the first thing I did was check for updates (firmware). Nothing.

did a quick google for you and it looks like someone on Voda NZ is having the same problem, and that it's something to do with the APN being stored on the SIM card so you can't change it on the phone, whereas a different sim card might make that option appear again.

Is the iPhone 3G locked to Vodafone?

Okay that is really weird, because the first gen allowed you to change anything you want. I am using the exact same SIM (both on 1st gen and 3G, 2nd gen iPhone).

I hope I'm not sending any data/losing credit.

I have just swapped my virgin sim from my 1.1.3 iphone into my new 3G iphone.

The optus network is up. the net via 3G seems to work fine. But I havent entered the virgin APN's into the 3G phone yet.

Do you think I am using VIRGIN's data or optus's data orginally associated with the 3G phone.

PS. When I synced after swapping the sims iTunes downloaded some updated carrier settings.

???

To upgrade to 5A347, do a restore - even though it's still v2.0, they did a sneaky update before the phone came out in the USA.

Even though it won't fix the issue where they removed APN settings, it's a good thing to have

I have a Telstra Outright phone. It has APN settings (APN, Username, Password). Perhaps Telstra aren't using the same method as Optus/Voda? Or maybe they never set my phone up properly...

^ They are just using different SIMs.

Telstra lets you change your APN even when locked. Voda, does not.
