Ok this discussion raises a question.
I have a first-gen iPhone v2.0 on my old Optus yes plan. There is no 'cellular data network' option in the settings. I'm looking at signing up with Optus now to get an iPhone cap contract. As there are no IPhones available, I can get the contract and sim now, whilst the iPhone 3G will arrive later.
So the question -
If I plug my new iPhone cap sim into my first-gen iPhone, will I be able to enable the data access. Seeing I don't have the 'cellular data network' option, is it simply a matter of turning 'data roaming' on?!
Edit - all sorted now, after hacking some settings in my iPhone

Hi
My company uses optus so i got my iphone thinking i could swap cards over. the problem is that i can connect to exchnage mail on my Dopod using windows mobile 5, ( I think you are talking about tthe APN)Connections, GPRS, Optus Internet, The internet, Connect too (The Internet)then the access point, username and password,
I have downloaded the APN fix from NZ but it keeps saying unsigned and i can not get mail from tour work server.it also has no place to put the Access Point.
Please help, first post, Please any ideas?
Thanks George

Optus, Telstra and Vodafone APN settings are already in the phone so you don't need to put them in.
The menu always appears when the phone doesn't have the APN settings it needs.

Hi still no joy, i have also noticed that on my dopod, the setting used proxy for the internet too, maybe that why i am not getting anything as well.
I am not able to surf anywhere on the 3g but i can wifi, so there must be an alternitive why to set the internet up that Optus is no sharing.
any other ideas?

No, the menu appears when the carrier settings plist tells it to. For the Telstra settings it appears, for the Optus and Vodafone settings it does not.
It is a carrier specific preference that Apple allows each carrier to determine.

Optus say, you need a specific data plan to work any data on Iphone, your standard 3g card will not work
So there.
Thanks people

That one works, but it doesn't allow you to change back and forth very easily. If you've disabled the data, then you can't get it back except when you have a wifi connection, and of course, when you have a wifi connection you are not needing the data turned back on! Catch 22.
As noted elsewhere in the thread, this is not an issue for Telstra customers, but for Optus and Vodafone customers, the Carrier plist has the "Cellular Data Network" menu disabled, so you can't touch it. The only other fix I'm aware requires you to jailbreak your phone. You can then edit the Carrier plist, either by SSH or by installing the relevant carrier GPRS fix that is available in Cydia.

As mentioned somewhere, what the unlockit.co.uk site does is give you a profile to install. The profile changes the APN when you install it.
So, if you save a profile (or two, eg, a "no.internet" dummy one to turn off internet access) and email it to yourself, as long as the email is saved on the phone, you'll be able to install the profile without being online.
