I can't seem to change the APN manually, but it seems to be working anyway...
It started out so well ... but then ended badly

An ulock without the option to change the APN is really only "half" an unlock.

Please tell us that a 3 SIM works and that you can edit the APN etc ... *crosses fingers and toes*

Awesome! Congrats Bishop! Very happy for you.

I'm trying to track down stock to get one today. I have ZERO chance. Looks like a very early morning, waiting at the Apple store for me tomorrow!

No worries mate

I can advise though, the 'unlocking' process is pretty seemless
I kept my 3 SIM in there so I can confirm that isn't a bad idea to

FYI - I requested at 9am on Monday morning

Can someone post the exact procedure for doing this please?
Do you need to have a 3G sim from another provider?

Bishop did you get some sort of notification? (eg like the SMS the Optus users are getting)

You also did pretty well to get it unlocked this quickly...seems there are others from last Friday who are still waiting...

PS: Yes a step by step of the procedure followed would be very handy as don't think we can trust Telstra to have much of a clue on troubleshooting.

No notification as such, I just kept at it.
I didn't do anything in particular to get it sped up - Telstra were no help.

Basically do this.

1) Open iTunes
2) Put <new carrier> SIM in
3) Plug iPhone in
4) Restore your iPhone
5) Follow the prompts
6) Restore complete it asks to put valid SIM in in order to activate - if it's unlocked, any SIM SHOULD do
7) It'll boot up and voila - unlocked iPhone

There is no magic steps to follow, it seems idiot proof (i.e. me)
Just keep at it

Hope that helps

Did the same as Bishop and now my 16gb iphone is now unlocked from the evil clutches of Telstra!

I also got the unlock for free with a little social engineering over the phone when I called up on Friday. Mentioned that the store manager of the Tlife shop in Melbourne explained that it was upto the discretion of Telstra to wave the unlocking fee and that I wouldn't have any problems if I relayed the cost involved in buying the handset, the queuing up and that he mentioned this to me at the store.

The guy on the phone spoke with his supervisor then shortly returned telling me that they have applied a $150 credit to my account.

I have verified this numerous times with different Telstra staff to be sure!

I am not telling you all this to make it sting, just that now that my phone is unlocked - perhaps you who are thinking of unlocking your iphones have a little hope in avoiding this blatant money grabbing extortion that we're all so used to from the big T.

Good luck to you all

My Telstra 16GB Black iPhone is now UNLOCKED also. Here's what I did:

(There was no SIM in the phone at all at this stage)
- Docked with iTunes
- Clicked "Restore" and elected to do a backup (just in case)
- Once the restore had finished, it prompted to insert a valid SIM to complete the Activation process
- I inserted an Optus 3G SIM and away it went.

Simple really.

FYI I received absolutely no notification from Telstra. I bought the phone on Tuesday and requested the unlock around 4pm Tuesday afternoon.

EDIT: Actually that isn't the whole story. After doing that I fired up Safari to see if data was working but all I got were errors. I then tried restoring the phone again THIS TIME WITH THE OPTUS SIM IN THE WHOLE TIME. Now it works just fine on Optus's 3G network (Safari, Mail, AppStore, the lot).
