(I realise that without data, Google Maps won't be able to download new maps, but apparently it does cache previously visited maps.)
This kind of thing is really important if you're travelling overseas. A GPS is great if you don't know a city but roaming mobile data costs a fortune. Caching tomorrow's maps is easy enough from a hotel's wi-fi -- if it's going to work. Anyone?

Caching is pretty useless though, as it doesn't store anything besides the actual map image, so search and directions don't work.

The search and directions aren't that important to me. I just want to know roughly where I am if I get lost on holiday.
Thanks for the info.

I can confirm that it does. I was looking up where I had to go on a country road at home, then watched the map as a passenger and noticed there was no signal after awhile, but the maps were obviously cached. This was after I set it to get directions there, so I think it cached all the information from point A to B with some level of zoom.

The Maps app does cache all of the maps needed when you set directions. That's why the iPod Touch has Maps: it would be pretty useless if it didn't cache.

Not sure if this has been mentioned.
Double clicking the home button when the phone is locked or asleep brings up the ipod controls.
Pretty handy when driving

Yep, you can turn this on and off from Settings > General > Home Button > iPod Controls.
Agreed, it's very handy indeed.

I picked mine u0p yester day-a white one.
It is amazing, honestly has even exceeded my expectations. There is no lag I can notice- The gps can show you walking around , the apps store is great Iv'e got the complete works of Shakespere and some language translators for free, the ipod is incredible (its the first real ipod Iv'e owned) , email, superb.
Build quality is stunning on mine-its so goregeous it needs protection.
The speaker is plenty load enough a(louder than I was expecting)nd although its tinny its loud enough to play with the ipod in a decent sized room
Wifi works so easily, data useag not that high to be really concerned 500mb should be enough.
All in all wow, incredible, amazing. I'm blown away. Best thing I've ever owned.
I'm looking forward to a TOM TOM etc GPS app which will come
Well worth the wait. All phones were brilliant too.

OMG after waiting 2yrs i have have an iphone!!! I went for the nostalgic white and doesnt show scratches as easily as the black one would.
What can i say - Its an extremely powerful device! So easy to use. I just love how apple integrate everything. Given that a mobile device is smaller and not as easy to use, you just want it to be as simple as possible.
Simplicity isnt easy to achieve it software and hardware design but the iPhone pulls it off.
Everything is just so well thought out. You'll be hard pressed to find a button or icon that doesnt really need to be there.
Very pleased customer here

Day two of owning the iPhone I went down to Bridge Rd Richmond (Melb) to buy a Door Lock for my House, however I get to where this store should be only to find they're no longer there - then it occurs to me that my iPhone might actually be useful, so I:
- googled the Store, the results gave me the new address plus a map of their new location, which showed they where in the same suburb but I didn't where it was in relation to my location.
- Then to work out where it was in relation to my location I used Maps, this worked brilliantly I was even able to watch the Pulsating Blue dot move down the street so I could confirm I was walking in the right direction
One question though, when I got the Google results I thought I'd be able to "touch" the Store's phone number and my iphone would dial it, but that didn't work - I thought I saw that functionality demo'd or was I dreaming?
OMFG - this thing is actually going to be useful in real life situations! I was really impressed.

Steve Jobs did demo this at MacWorld '07 when he found a starbucks store (Can I have 1,000 latte's or something) :P. I thought it did still work. I will try it later.
