The 3G's internals were tested inside the old iPhones for months before it was released - to say it's untested is rather far from reality

i just played with an iphone at the apple store and was left pretty unimpressed. My opinion, comments welcome :
1) Black is absolute finger magnet. There is no choice imo, have to get white unless you want it looking like a greasy phone.
2) Touchscreen glass itself gets dirty very quickly. I wouldn't mind a stylus to be honest, I don't want to be wiping the thing every 2 minutes.
3) The phone is so laggy its not funny. Go to phone, hit contacts, or favourites or recently used and it took a good 5-10 seconds to open up. On certain apps, hitting home took a good 3-4 seconds to show. Just felt very slow and unresponsive.
4) The accelerometer didn't work as well as I would have hoped. I couldn't figure out why the accelerometer wasn't working, until a friend of mine pointed out that i had to have the phone pretty much vertical for it to work. Having the phone in a normal viewing position (i.e. not perfectly vertical) and turning it didn't work.
5) I could see myself getting tired of pinching and unpinching very quickly. It just felt like a uncomfortable thing to be doing. Don't get me wrong, it's the best browser to date, but pinching/unpinching felt uncomfortable.
6) No apps running in the background ? With Nokia S60 phone, if you've got a app open and want to do something else, hold the menu button and it'll give you access. Kind of like alt-tab for a phone. iPhone has no such thing.
7) Google maps is pretty cool.
And the usual no copy paste/mms/etc etc.
Thats about it for my thoughts

i upgraded from a nokia N95 with an 8gb card to a 16gb iphone.
while i still love my N95 and all of its features (many of wich are far better than the iphones) i have fallen in love with my iphone.
1) yes black does collect finger prints when you have it naked. i keep mine in a cover so its not so much of an issue for me.
2) the screen ive found to be rather easy to clean with out the need for a polishing cloth.
but again it has a scratch proof cover on it that helps reduce finger prints and smudges.
but every phone screen is prone to getting dirty. my N95 constantly had smudges and crap on its screen from me sliding the phone open and closed.
3)the only time my iphone has lagged is once when i was typing a txt.
yeah it anoyed me for the first few words but it soon fixed its self up.
its just as speedy at opening up apps and contacts ect as my other phone.
its faster at recieving and opening emails than my N95.
4) have you played monkey ball yet. best use of accelerometer on a phone yet! even the auto screen rotation is better than on my N95 (i used rotateme for auto screen rotation for my N95)
5) meh.. the pinch and pull has been a non issue for me while on safari. one issue with safari is that it doesn't load the whole web page like my N95 it just loads half. when you scroll down the safari starts to load the rest of the page. small gripe though.
6) i agree it would be awesome to be able to "tab out" like on the N95 and other S60 phones. but that being said when you reopen apps they usualy open at the exact last place you closed them and if they dont they reopen and load super fast.
7) google Maps are exactly like on my N95 only on a bigger screen.
what i miss from my N95 is the pod tracker, so i could download my podcasts right to my phone while @work so i could listen to them on my break and on the way home. and watching movies while in the web browser thanks to the flash lite. other than that im loving every thing else.

1) My black 16GB is a fingerprint magnet.
2) Slow to respond at times, resulting in me needing to do a "re-boot".
3) Some applications will load and then quit themselves, which has become very annoying.

It's not that bad actually. I tend to wash my hands a fair bit though, so perhaps that helps.

Again, this isn't a big a problem. I should think the display models would be a lot worse than a 'regular' phone, as they have a lot more people (of various degrees of hygiene) playing with them. I have a screen protector on, so that may help, but after a week of heavy use my model is not particularly dirty.

While sometimes it is laggy, It is more in the area of 2-4 seconds10 seconds seems a bit hyperbolic. Most apps open reasonably speedy, although as you say contacts can be a little slow. That said, I do have a problem with the sms app which seems to be ridiculously slow until I put the phone to sleep and wake it up again. The home screen has always popped up almost instantly for me.

I really agree with this point; I find it had to get it to rotate when I want it to. Often it will rotate when I don't want it to, and then I have to try and coax it back into the right orientation. It's a little annoying, especially considering the accelerometer works so well in games, but not things like safari.

I don't find it annoying, but I could imagine some might. It seems a fairly clever way to zoom arbitrary increments though.

Why would you want this though?
Having apps runing in the background is only going to slow things down, and of course the lead to the whole 'app management' problem as discussed in the keynote at WWDC. Applications remember what you are doing/last did in them, and open instantly (well, except as discussed above) so it is virtually as if they are running instantly.

It is cool, but the places (banks, cafes, etc) data doesn't seem to be very accurate. I searched for commonwealth bank in the city and it completed missed the one next to the QVB. As usual, the Australian version of things is always lacking to a degree. I think overall google maps app needs to be improved etc.

Yeah, I agree. Luckily Apple assures us this stuff (well, at least copy and paste) is on their list, so maybe when 2.* comes around we'll get lucky.

I just cant understand why so many people say that the back of the iphone attracting fingerprints is a 'problem'????!!!
Its just a fingerprint - wipe it off!

For those of you with fingerprint/smudge probs on screen- I have a 1st Gen iPhone - the invisible shield from Zagg ( ZAGG | invisibleSHIELD | iPhone, iPod Cases, Screen Protectors, Covers, Shields, Skins, Invisible Shield) makes the screen much easier to clean, not to mention protecting from scratches etc -I'm a big fan. It's a shame they didn't keep with the same materials I much prefer the metal back of the 1st iPhone.

I feel the same about my iPhone as I felt when I first saw a Mac in 1986 - so THIS is how these things should work!!
For my purposes it is a magical device. The ease-of-use, elegance of design and intuitiveness has finally given me a phone I can make full use of.
The joy of having it plugged into my car stereo, listening to music - call comes in - music fades - swipe the slider, touch Accept - and speaking to the caller via my car speakers and using the phone mic - this is wonderful.
The beauty of the fingertip magnifier to move the cursor - a thing of joy. I have chubby fingers, but find the keyboard quite usable.
Mail on the go, all my contacts and iCal right there at my fingertips. I've just signed up for MobileMe and am looking forward to using it.
Most of the cons of the phone don't bother me - I never send or want to shoot video, I have a rubber case so I dont worry about fingerprints, as a developer I always have my Mac with me to top the battery up.
I do notice a lag sometimes after touching a button, but I think it's acceptable.
Web browsing speed (when not on Wi-Fi) is definitely slower than my NextG Telstra ExpressCard, but considering that web-browsing will be the exception rather than the rule, it works for me.
I was driving recently and used maps with the locator. Roughly 100K per minute to keep updated using the Locator button. (My passenger was using it, not me!)
I will probably regret at some point not waiting for the 16Gb version, but they were 3 weeks away (maybe more) and I wanted one NOW. Plus, 7 Gb of music seems sufficient to me anyway.
Oh yes, I had a fairly new Nokia which would get one, maybe two bars reception in my office. The iPhone gets three, sometimes four - am I stoked, or what? Vodafone, by the way (the Nokia as well)
Buyers remorse - ZERO. Buyers elation - MAX

iTunes + 2 iPhones works fine??
Hi all,
If anyone could help me with this, that'd be awesome, thanks in advanced!!
Let's say I have 2 iPhones and 1 computer, so it means I use same iTunes for 2 iPhones.
If I bought an application from iTunes, can I load it into 2 iPhones or just 1?
How's the free application, can I load it into 2 iPhones using same iTunes??
Thanks again.

Don't quote me on this, but I think you are able to put any app on multiple devices if they all use the same iTunes account (and you're logged in) because apps that you've downloaded are tied to your account rather than the device itself, which is how you're able to download a paid app for free the second time, when you've already bought it first time around. There *might* be something to stop you using paid apps on more than one device but I'm pretty sure there isn't. See what other MacTalkers say though.

You can quote me tho 2 computers 2 iPhones both with the same purchased app from the store, it works fine just has to sync with the iTunes Store account authorized for that user.

my, slightly better than 1st gen, 3g iPhone
I had a first gen iphone. Yesterday I spent a ridiculous amount of time JailBreaking it but eventually upgraded it to 2.0
I did this cause I got sick of waiting for my 3g iPhone. Of course 7hrs later I had it. lol (still handy for when I sell it)
Negative
1. STILL no sms landscape keyboard - What's with that?
2. MobileMe is not the "exchange for the rest of us" it's just a sync utility - blah
3. No as solid feeling and look as the 1st gen
4. ppl see u using it and feel like they are allowed to talk to you
5. STILL NO copy / paste
6. STILL NO ext HDD function. I loved carrying round my old ipod video and taking all sorts of files with me
(will edit more in when i come across them)
7. gps maps cant load quickenough if you are driving 80klm/hr+
8. Still have to jailbreak to get free apps
Pros
1. I now own one. Not just signed up for one but it's in my hands
2. Noticeable dif in sms texting. Better than previous
3. can connect to exchange
4. GPS - maps and sat overlay rocks
5. Optus have reasonable data plans w00t
6. 3g data just sooooooo much better than gprs or edge (although they are both better than nothing)
7. In adelaide (where i am) optus 3g network much better (i reckon) than the old gsm network.
8. cool apps and games
9. ppl look at you with envy
10. 1 device. i used to have pda phone and ipod touch (before 1st gen)
(will edit more in when i find them)
But . . .
as it stands, if you arent going to use a lot of data, the GPS or exchange then i would just get a 1st gen 2g iphone and upgrade/jailbreak to 2.0 firmware. If you have access to wifi networks you will be laughing. I ordered my wife an iphone 3g as well (she also has a 1st gen) but she would rarely use the GPS or exchange so I am thinking about cancelling the order (havent made up mind yet).

I'm pretty happy with mine after a few days using it. The firmware is still quite buggy as it crashes a bit when opening apps. Also I cannot for the life of me get it to use the internet at work via wifi on the airport express. It works perfectly fine at home on the netgear DG834g. Everything else I have works on the work's wifi except for the phone.
Anyway, I am not that bothered by the lack of sms entry in landscape mode as I find I can type pretty fast in portrait (with the help of the suggestions it gives which works really well) and it allows me to see more text
